Here is a list of things to check:
1. Go into the camera's menus and make sure that the flash is enabled.
2. Check in the menus that the flash is not set in the command mode.
3. You didn't say if your camera was in the auto mode, aperture or shutter priority, etc. If the camera is in shutter priority or manual mode, make sure that the shutter speed is below 1/250th of a second.
4. Make sure that the ISO speed isn't set so high that the camera thinks that flash is not needed.

Why won't the flash hood stay closed?

Look at your camera's body with the lens pointing toward you. In the upper right quadrant find the Flash Mode button and push it until the flash is turned off (look for symbol on the camera's display panel). The instructions are on pages 50 and 51 of the D5100 manual. If you do not have a manual, you can download it from the Nikon USA website free by following this link:

Nikon D5100 camera flash does not pop-up. Any suggestions?

You can't pop up the flash in the Auto mode. In this mode the camera decides whether to use the flash or not.

Try switching to one of the PSAM modes. Does the flash then pop up when you push the flash button?

Nikon pop up flash

This, most likely, will not help you. If it is stuck and you smell something burnt I think your camera has serious problems. I think this is the time to decide REPAIR or REPLACE.

Yes, you can use the SB50DX on the D5100, however not in the TTL modes. It will only work in the manual or rear-curtain sync modes. For more information, look on page 204 of your camera's manual. You can download it for free at this link: https://support.nikonusa.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/17325
