SOURCE: i have a 1976 65hp mercury outboard how do i change the oil

The drain/fill hole are the same. Put a coffee can or something like that to measure the amont of oil that comes out. Check with a boat parts, or marine or sporting goods section of biggy store. They (at least to) make a pump assembly with hose and threaded end that fits into the hole for the lower unit screw. the other part of the pump fits in a gear oil quart bottle. 80 or 90 is no matter, but needs to say marine grade or suitable for marine use. Nothing special, Penzoil for sure and I think a company Lubrite plus many others make an OK oil. Anyway, put the pump in the bottle and put back in as much as drained out. The level may be marked on the side of the lower unit. If you don't get almost as much out as you put in, check for leaky seal too.

Spark plug wires are crossed on 79 mercury outboard 115hp thunderbolt ignition. what is that correct order?

This engine should have a separate coil (with plug wire attached) for each cylinder. The top coil is for the top cylinder, the bottom coil is for the bottom cylinder. Wires should not be long enough to make any mistakes! Coils should be located on right side of engine (when standing behind the engine).

How do I set timing?

I don't think mercury has changed their engines much in the past few decades with the exception of the newer high tech & 4-strokes. You can probably get the procedure from a shop manual that covers their 2-stroke 65hp from the 90's or later. The easy part is that with it being a 2-stroke there will only be 1 top dead center as opposed to a 4-stoke which appears to have 2 until you figure out if the rotor is pointed 180 degrees the wrong way. The only other thing you need to know is which cylinder is #1. Bring that cylinder all the way up. The markings will be on the fly wheel and the engine block. What's left... a few degree before or after. You should be able to get it going with some trial & error & maybe fine tune it by ear. I did this with a Mercruiser & found out I had it perfect 5 years later when I got the shop manual. Good luck.

Turns over but makes no attempt to start what to look for first

Pull one of the spark plug boots from a spark plug and hold the removed end of the spark plug close to a screw or bolt....have someone turn the key over and look for a spark to jump from the boot to the metal.

Come back and tell us what you see.
