I have a microwave oven that will not power up unless I push in the door latch button, about 1/4 way in and hold it.

Adjust the latch switch assembly to make sure that the door hooks engage with the switches. Loosen the 2 phillip screws holding the assembly and slide back and forth to adt. Retighten when the door hooks are making solid contact with the switches.

And you can't just pull the door open? I know it's easier to push the open door button but both ways should work unless the safety switch bracket moved from it's intended position. I hesitate to offer this solution, but who wants decayed food smelling up the home? Let's assume it's a counter top oven, remove all cover screws and the cover. STAY AWAY FROM ALL WIRING and I should have said first unplug the power from the appliance. Locate the door latch area and lift up on the plastic/metal bar that has a spring attached to it and the door should be released. Pushing the door release button should lead you to the latch. Once you see how it works you may find the reason the latch is malfunctioning. If it's a over the range type you will have to remove a grill at the top of the oven to access the mounting screws that release the oven from the bracket but the latch reference above will apply to this type as well.

There are usually 3 door interlock switches on most microwave ovens, which are held in place by plastic pieces which are screwed in place from the front of the microwave oven (although you may have to remove or tilt out the top of the control console to see them). Make sure these plastic support pieces are positioned against the front of the microwave oven, and make sure the screws are tight.

One of the latches may have been damaged or is misaligned and is not lifting the other latch clear of the housing. Remove from any power source, remove the cover of the cabinet. Slacken off the clamp mechanism and ease the clamp over the guide to allow the door to open. When a new door lever is in place, the door may be easily adjusted by slackening off the screws that clamp the door catch/actuators in place whilst holding the door closed and then tightening the screws. The rear of the door may be adjusted by slackening the lower door hinge screws and adjusting as required.

Do not pry the door open since there is an easier remedy which will lead you in the direction that you need to fix your problem. Take the cover off after you disconnect the power to it. Once you have taken the cover off (only a few screws) you will be able to see the two latches that hold the door closed and the link that opens both of them. You can just lift both latches at the same time and it will open. After you have done that take a good look and press in on the open door button and you will see where you have the problem of the door hanging. That button should push a linkage that pushes up on both latches at once to open the door. It is spring loaded so that it comes back down so that when you close the door it will hold the door close.You need to take the cover off the microwave so that you can pull both of the latches that hold the door closed up. When you push the button in it engages a linkage that pushes both taches up at the same time to open the door. It is springloaded and will come back down during normal operation to hold the door closed when you close it again. That area is where your problem is. By looking at what happens when you press the open door button you should be able to readily see where the problem lies in that linkage

Hi, this is a faulty door latch assembly. the switch is malfunctioning. the entire door latch assembly will need to be replaced.

As per a similar manual:

1. Microwave leakage limit (Power density limit): The power density of microwave radiation emitted by a microwave oven should not exceed 1mW/cm2 at any point 5cm or more from the external surface of the oven, measured prior to acquisition by a purchaser, and thereafter (through the useful life of the oven), 5 mW/cm2 at any point 5cm or more from the external surface of the oven.

2. Safety interlock switches: Primary interlock relay and door sensing switch shall prevent microwave radiation emission in excess of the requirement as above mentioned, secondary interlock switch shall prevent microwave radiation emission in excess of 5 mW/cm2 at any point 5cm or more from
the external surface of the oven.

You need to be sure that if the meter comes with a styrofoam cone tip, that should be installed or it will give high readings.

Also, the meter should be calibrated periodically, typically annually.

If the meter gets dropped or bumped, that may throw it out of alignment.

The most common causes of excessive leakage are loose or misaligned door switch mounts or hinges and physical damage to the chassis of the oven.

The most common cause of the misalignment of door switch mounts is slamming the door.

I would be sure my meter is set up and calibrated, then I would be sure my door switch mounts are aligned & tightened properly.

From a similar manual:

1. Disconnect the power supply cord, and then remove outer case.

2. Open the door and block it open.

3. Discharge high voltage capacitor. If the door sensing switch, secondary interlock switch and monitor switch do not operate properly due to a misadjustment, the following adjustment should be made.

4. Loosen the two (2) screws holding latch hook to the oven cavity front flange.

5. With door closed, adjust latch hook by moving it back and forth, and up and down. In and out play of the door allowed by the upper and lower position of the latch hook should be less than 0.5mm. The vertical position of the latch hook should be adjusted so that the door sensing switch and secondary interlock switch are activated with the door closed. The horizontal position of the latch hook should be adjusted so that the plunger of the monitor switch is pressed with the door closed.

6. Secure the screws with washers firmly.

7. Check the operation of all switches. If each switch has not activated with the door closed, loosen screw and adjust the latch hook position.

After adjustment, check the following.

1. In and out play of door remains less than 0.5mm when in the
latched position. First check upper position of latch hook, pushing and pulling upper portion of door toward the oven face. Then check lower portion of the latch hook, pushing and pulling lower portion of the door toward the oven face. Both results (play in the door) should be less than 0.5mm.

2. The door sensing switch and secondary interlock switch interrupt the circuit before the door can be opened.

3. Monitor switch contacts close when door is opened.

4. Re-install outer case and check for microwave leakage around
door with an approved microwave survey meter. (Refer to Microwave Measurement Procedure.)

There are a series of switches in the door latch mechanism which are a safety interlock system. If the latch on the door is secure and not broken then it is in the latch mechanism itself. It is possible for the mechanism to come loose and stop the oven from working. The control panel will have to be removed and the mechanism adjusted for proper operation.

Alternately if the door hinges (screw in type) are not aligned properly then it can cause the same symptoms.

I am unable to locate your model in my reference, but there is usually one or two screws behind the grille that hold the control panel on if it is a vent hood style. If it is a cabinet style then the cabinet will have to be opened. Be sure to disconnect power at lease 1/2 hour before opening.
