A solution from the internet: Make a boil wash (with no clothes and detergents) put into the powder drawer a cup of bicarbonate of soda. It should clean the machine and move out the bad smell. Another: I have a front loading machine also and am not willing to have to constantly clean out the machine; the soap and fabric softeners you use are building up between the inner and outer drums (and on the drum itself sometimes). Because the machines door is so tightly sealed (to prevent water leakage) the smell from this buildup is awful. I finally found the solution. MAGGIE'S SOAP NUTS -- they are all natural (grow on trees) and will remove the grime from your drum and also clean your clothes (you won't even need fabric softener anymore). Stop using commercial detergents and fabric softeners and start using Maggie's Soap Nuts. They are not very cheap but they work great -- I have found that making a liquid out of the soap nuts and storing it in a bottle works better than putting them in the sack cloth they come with (because front loaders do not agitate constantly like regular machines, the cloth bag sits on the clothes and sometimes leaves a stain -- the liquid will not leave a stain. YOU WILL SOLVE YOUR PROBLEM AND HAVE SOFTER CLOTHES TO BOOT (without fabric softener so you save some money there). They are also better for septic tanks, the environment and your health! I believe Whole Foods sells them and they are also on the internet at www.Maggiessoapnuts.com Note: Also go to www.newstarget.com -- they are going to buy these in bulk to cut the cost in half but don't have them yet. You should be able to buy them there soon. Note: Forgot to tell you to run some of this thru your machine with hot water before washing your clothing to clean out the buildup that is already in the machine.

Run a wash cycle with only some bleach in it. That works for us everytime ours gets a bit stinky... Good luck!

SOURCE: WF740 Hotpoint washing machine with bad smell from

Wash it out with a strong solution of washing soda placed into the drum before you fill the machine

Ps

Run the machine empty through a full hot cycle then run the soda one

The first will soften the deposits and the second should help kill the bacteria that is causing the smell.

Reducing the load so that there is more agitation helps as well

SOURCE: smell coming from washing machine

IMPORTANT: Read thoroughly. DO NOT add detergent or other laundry products to this cycle.
1. Remove all items from the washer.
2. Open the dispenser drawer and 2/3 cup (160 mL) of liquid chlorine bleach to the bleach compartment. DO NOT use more than 2/3 cup (160mL) of bleach per cycle as this will lead to product damage.
3. Close the washer door and dispenser drawer.
4. Select the Clean Washer cycle or a full wash cotton 104 F wash (40 C). DO NOT use any higher temperature as this will cause unnecessary fumes
5. Press Start and allow cycle to complete.
6. If the bad odour persists, repeat the procedure 1 or 2 more times. This may be necessary if this is the first time you have run this cycle.
7. After the cycle is complete, leave the door open slightly to allow ventilation and drying of the washer interior.
8. Repeat the cleaning procedure monthly.
To maintain the washer freshness:
1. Use only HE High Efficiency detergent.
2. Leave the door open after each cycle to for better ventilation and drying of the washer interior.
3. Use warm / hot water in your machine unless the fabric you are washing requires cold.
4. Use the correct amount of fabric softener.
5. If your laundry room is damp, use a dehumidifier.
6. Clean the door seal of visible residue.

SOURCE: Terrible smell coming from our washing machine

remove bottom cover at back of machine, loosen large jubilee clip on hose between drum and pump. pull hose down and off, take out strainer basket and pull top off, clean top, ball and basket by running under tap. clean out hose with an old rag. reassemble strainer and put back into hose, in the correct position. fix hose back on to drum and tighten clip. run machine on a hot wash and all should be fine.

SOURCE: drum smells

Open the door and run your hand deep inside the door seal. It probally has a slime around it. You can clean this with a bleach water mix. You might need to pull the seal somewhat inside out to get it real clean. Then run an empty load to flush it all out. Here is a link for replacing the seal or spring clips if you pull one off. http://appliancehelponline.com/washerdoorseal.html

Testimonial: "had already run a boil was to no avail. however after washing the inside with bleach solution and leaving overnight it seems ok again."

Washing machine drum always smells of stale water. Have tried hot washes, washing machine cleaner kits, cleaning filters, leaving door open, have also checked machine is correctly plumbed in but cannot get...

This will potentially sound odd, but run the 90 degree cycle with 3 dishwasher tablets in the drum. The smell is bacterial and probably the result of a build up of residue from biological soap powder (Which is simply bacteria that eat your stains). Dishwasher tablets are anti-bacterial and will kill the bugs making the smell

A bad smell from inside

A lot of machines can suffer from this problem. It is usually down to a bacteria build up between the drum and the tub.The majority of appliances that suffer form this have been used mainly on 40 degree washes and with a biological detergent.
The best way to get rid of this smell is to place two tablespoons of washing soda or soda crystals in the detergent drawer and then run the appliance empty on the 90 degree wash. You may have to repeat this treatment several times before the smell goes but it will go eventually.
