Won't boot up but need a repair estimate for out of warranty repairs in Canada?

I have a Creative MicroPhoto which is about 1.5 years old (just out of Creative warranty) that has just stopped working. The screen stops at the CREATIVE logo and just hangs. I can get to the Reformat or install new firmware but the unit isn't recognized by the Recovery Tools option from Creative so it looks like my system is kaput! ....but I have an extended warranty which requires that I get an estimate for repairs and they will cover either the complete cost of repairs including shipping, taxes etc or the original cost which was nearly $300 CDN!!!!
Problem is Creative won't talk to me unless I pay them money for support because the item is out of warranty. I can't seem to find anyone that would provide an estimate for repairs....any suggestions for up here in Canada would be much appreciated!!!
Thanks....

Bad news. This is a hardware problem. Either your motherboard or your hard drive have expired, and will need to be replaced. To find out about services, scroll down on this page to the Repair Service box on the right side, and enter your zip code. This will bring up various repair service companies; go to their website and look at pricing.

Sears gave me an estimate of $1439.65 to repair machine by replacing the following: 1 SUB TUB-OUTE - 213.82 1 GASKET - 12.16 1 SUB TUB-OUTE - 411.91 1 SUB BASKET - 492.69 1 BELT ...

Check your warranty. We just had that problem, with the exact same parts replaced, but the outer tub has a ten year warranty, and the basket a lifetime warranty. We just paid labor and for one belt. Our washer is also almost eight years old.

Hi my name is Roety,
I can help you with your issue ,
Most companies provide a 1 year warranty and then you are on your own. Philips, Magnavox honored their warranty. That being said the shops giving you the estimate hopefully checked inside the Tv.
Some repair shops try to do component level repairs , some just replace the whole board. $600 sounds like a whole board repair. Call a few shops and ask if they do component level repair on yout TV.
If it needs Convergence ICs or a Power capacitor the parts cost less than $50 and the shop could profit even if they only charged you $300.
With the economy being slow I'll bet someone would repair it for less.
Only go where they give a free estimate
Tell them your limit and communicate up front so they will be able to try to just fix it for your set price.

Power Light goes on but iron will not heat

If it is more than 3 years old (no warranty) then you can get it repaired or replaced. The heating coil is broken. The heating coil in the iron cannot be fixed, but must be replaced.

If the iron is less than 3 years old, you can get it repaired under warranty; however, shipping and other costs may not be worth having it repaired. (More than $30).
If you can get an estimate, you might want to have it repaired.

My recommendation? Replace it.

My zen won't power off

Some ideas
  1. First, try a reset: Insert a paperclip into the reset hole at the bottom of the Vision
  2. Or, try running off mains power, not battery (in case you have a dead battery)
  3. If you're able to get in to the system, try going into Recovery Mode (see below)
Otherwise, if you have a dead unit, consider returning it to the place of purchase, or contact Creative to get your machine repaired. If the Zen is less than one year old, you should be able to get it repaired under Creative's warranty. For details on how to do this, go to uk.europe.creative.com/support/warranty , or you can call +353 1 4333200.

Creative Zen: Screen blank, but plays.

I have seen that problem with other Creative players including my old Zen Xtra 30GB. If it is less than 3 months old I would suggest sending it in for replacement. Creative's warranty period is only 90 days. If it is out of warranty, it may cost more to get it repaired or replaced than it is worth. Creative products are great but in recent years their support and warranty policies have gotten horrible and repair costs are usually not worth it.
When mine did that I put it away for a week or so and when I turned it on again, the display worked normally. It started acting up one other time, and I came to the conclusion that it was a heat issue causing my problem. Unfortunately it developed power issues and as I said, they wanted more to fix it after a year than it was worth and I opted for an iPod.
Cheers and best wishes.

Stopped cooling

Hello cpuklutz
Welcome

You said, Kenmore; 21 cu ft; 10-years old; just stopped cooling; wondering if it even makes any financial sense to get estimate to repair, or is 10 years about it's trouble free length of service

Here is an article that you may find useful and interesting related to your situation.
Repair or replace?

When to pull the plug on your old refrigerator

It nearly always makes sense to undertake simple do-it-yourself repairs,
such as replacing a gasket on a refrigerator or a freezer.

Typically, you'll also find a troubleshooting section for more-serious problems
in the owner's manual.

Should you pay for a repair or buy a new model?
The answer depends mostly on the age of your refrigerator,
how much you bought it for,and the cost of the repair.

Follow these guidelines:

When a repair makes sense.

If your refrigerator is under warranty or less than four years old (three years for top-freezers),
paying for a repair makes sense.
Note that refrigerators under warranty might require service from a factory-authorized technician;
readers have found them on a par with independent repairers.

When a repair might be a wise choice.

If your refrigerator is out of warranty and is four to seven years old,
it might make sense to pay for a repair. Customers generally pay $100 to $200 for a repair.
But you might want to buy a new model even at this stage,
given that today's models are quieter and have added features.
Higher energy efficiency is another plus: Energy Star-qualified models made after April 28, 2008,
are 43 percent more efficient than conventional models built before 2001 and 56 percent
more efficient than those built before 1993.

When it pays to replace.

The repair costs more than half the price of a comparable new refrigerator.
Data also shows that it doesn't pay to fix a less-expensive top-freezer refrigerator
six or more years old or a bottom-freezer or side-by-side eight or more years old.

Thanks to better recycling programs, less than 10 percent
of a refrigerator you replace is likely to end up in a landfill.

Thank You, HUUUM

Creative 8gb mirophoto freezes at logo

I suppose that you have a bad hardisk. I have repaired several models of Creative Zen including the hardisk types (Zen Micro, Microphoto, Neeon, Zen 20 Gbytes, and your problems points to a bad hardisk symptoms. Either the disk or the read/ write head stuck up. Do you hear clicks in the player upon startup? If yes, then do the following procedures: If you're out of warranty, then you might want to open your player, and do some repair yourself, but be very careful. Somebody has posted on how to dismantle the zen microphoto, please search for the site. Once you got to the hardisk, carefully remove it from the player... Remove the sticker. There's some holes in the cover, can you see the disk and the read/ write shaft? Insert a piece of wire or anything that can be used to move the shaft a little, again be very careful. AVOID SCRATCHING THE DISK OR, Move it to the right. If you're lucky to have just a jammed or stucked shaft, then you just save bucks. Replace everything and test your player. You might want to modify your player by replacing the hardisk into a compatible compact flash. it is the same size and same pinouts. A step-by-step procedure has been posted somewhere, please search for that. If you're player powers up and freezes on creative logo, or go to the recovery mode directly, then your player still works, and you just got a hardisk problem. try replacing it. I'm lucky enough to have a warehouse in my area here in the Philippines who sells surplus Creative mp3 players (various models and products)for a very cheap price, sold asis. So I have ample stocks of boards and parts for my repairs.
