MY FIRST GUESS WOULD BE OVERFILLED
CRANKCASE-CHECK LEVEL FIRST
ANY P.C.V. TYPE IN-LINE COMPONENTS?
NEXT, IS ENGINE WORN, AND BLOWING IT BY RINGS?
For many models, there is a tube from the engine block that ports fumes back into the air box similar to positive crankcase ventilation. The idea is these fumes get sucked back into the air stream to get burned on the return loop. If your oil level is too high or you are riding really tough, some oil can be burped into the air box. Check your oil level, replace or just clean your prefilter/filter. We use fuel in the field to clean the excess oil it when this happens and just give it time to dry....If the bike shut down as a consequence, you may need to clean the spark plug and/or use a carb/fuel injector spray to remove in line gunk.

Check the cam shaft. The exhaust lob is the weak spot. They will wear down to nothing.

Solution#1 worked perfectly. It only took about 15 minutes all together.
the side panel removes easily. It just slides out of the other panel. Once you have removed the handle (Shifter) and the other two bracket bolts, just place it back into the shifter housing and move it around. I was amazed at how easy this was to repair. I also turned the ignition to the on position to see if it was changing gears and it was.

I tried this today and it worked. Pull the sideplate from the ATV so
that you have access to the gear shifter assembly. Unbolt the gearshift
assembly from the mounting bracket. There are two bolts at the rear
near the two rods that exit the assembly and three on the bottom. When
the bolts are out, remove the assembly from the mounting bracket. Hold
it in your hand and move the shift lever through all of the positions.
This won't actually shift the transmission, but it should free up the
rods in the assembly. Remount the assembly with the five bolts and it
should now be able to shift out of reverse.

I have a 2006 Sportstman 500HO ATV, EFI. Sometimes it will run 100% correct, other times it will start, idle fine but then when giving it throttle will will start to surge almost like it's hitting a rev limited. Sometimes it will backfire and stall. I already replaced fuel filter, flushed the fuel lines and gave it fresh gas and installed a new spark plug, but no good. I also checked the throttle switch and it's not making contact to stall it. I download the service manaul and tested each sensor and they tested fine which is probablt why I get no check engine light.
This ATV is mainly used to plow snow in my driveway, no salt. It's used around my property but very lightly. It's still as clean as it was when I bought it and it doesn't have but about 40 hours on it.
