SOURCE: My 61" hitachi rear proj has a very dark picture.

It sounds that lamp in TV is weak and not throwing enough light to bright the screen for good image.
How old is this TV and did you replaced its Lamp recently?
If lamp has not been replaced yet or in last 2-3 years, replace it.

If not bright again and not a generic bulb-possible problem with the lamp ballast that powers the lamp.

Hitachi LCD M50VS810 -- picture gradually darkened up over the past 4 days and now picture won't come on. Replace bulb?

If it uses a lamp that is possible---sets with a lamp will often dim down just before the lamp fails in a total way.

You will need to replace the lamp. That is the only thing that will cause the picture on a DLP to go dark. Please take a few moments to rate my answer. Thanks....

Screen getting dark

If you have never changed the lamp this is more than likely the issue, as the tv ages the lamp looses brightness. Most lamps are rated for 3000-5000 hrs of use. Replace the lamp assembly part # UX21514 and you will notice a much brighter picture. You do not mention if the tv plays the right colors on the entire screen. These have had light engine issues.
Good luck with it

Hitachi 50V500, no picture ,sounds for about 15 sec.then goes off

Hello,

I would try to re-seat the lamp. Pull the lamp out, check it to see if it may have gone bad again, then put it back in to make sure the contacts are connected. Before applying power, unplug the TV for 5 minute, and then plug in/turn it on.

Most lamps, if bad from the factory, will go out within 3 months of use. It does happen, and happens more often than you would think.

Try this, and see what happens. Good luck.

Problems with brightness on the hitachi 50v810

Yes, they dim as they age, and you've done well to get 3 years out of one.
Projection TV makers charge an arm and a leg for their replacement lamps. They make it easy to do but as a result the custom lamp assy is expensive. The trick is to just buy the bulb for your model TV from any number of us aftermarket sources at a fraction of the lamp price and install it in the old lamp yourself. really easy.
