Chain saw has kickback when cranking over with starter rope

The ignition timing is controled by the flywheel in relation to the core of the ignition unit and the key way in the crankshaft, so if the key in the flywheel has Shepard then the saw will kick back, if the key is ok then you can increase the air gap between the coil and the flywheel magnets to 0.5 mm, this may help.

I have a J3816 chain saw. I need a new chain. What do I look for? I understand it is a Homelite in JD clothing. [email protected]

I don't know what suppliers you have in your area but where I live tractor supply, orechlins,and true value all have good selections of chains and knowledgeable sales staff. Most have a selection booklet that lists proper chain selections fo bar length, manufactures, chain type [ low kickback, fast cut, etc.]
You will need model number, manufactures name, chain length, type of chain you want. I would use the low kickback chain in almost all types of wood. About the only type of wood that I would use a more aggressive chain on is soft high moisture content woods like cottonwood or certain elms and pines. I hope this helps you. Thanks

Check to see if you have the chain oriented correctly - it is east to put them on backward without realizing it. Th3e teeth should point forward, with the anti - kickback lug in front of the tooth. Let me know if this helps!!

Need a chain for 14in electric poulan chain saw the normal 14 in chain does not list the electric saw as one it will fit

Hello Jennifer;
The number of drive links, pitch and gauge of the chain need to be determined to answer your question. If you take your saw or just the chain to a local chain saw outlet a new chain can be fabricated in a very few minutes. This will save shipping and handling fees as well. While there get the numbers mentioned above. Once you have these you can likely find a low kickback chain in a local home center the next time the chain needs replacement.
The FAQs here can likely answer all your questions.

Starts but chain wont turn. and white smoke comes out the side where chain is. is it the clutch thats burn out?

Grasp the forward most upper handle (hand guard), move it forward, did it click? If no the brake is released. Pull it aft until the brake latches open (clicks), may require some grunt at rear extreme.
Remove the clutch cover, bar and chain. Start the saw, does it still smoke? Yes post back below, no reassemble your saw, ensure the brake is open. Start teh saw. Smoke? If yes post back below.

It starts up, but when trigger is pulled, the

Most saws have a safety or anti kickback brake. Yours might have tripped. There is a guard in front of where your left hand holds the saw. With the saw NOT running, pull the guard HARD towards the back of the saw. It should move a bit ant you may hear a click. The chain should now move. If the chain moves easily when the saw is not running, but doesn't move when you rev the saw up, the clutch is broken.

Cant get clutch cover off new Husqvarna 235e chain saw

Mine did this when nearly brand new. You likely have a nasty jam of oil and sawdust stuck between the chain brake and the flywheel. It can be loosened by either careful prying of the case or precise shots of carb cleaner up in the housing. While you are in there look for a buildup of oil around the chain brake connection to the kickback paddle.
