I have a whirlpool, heavy duty super capacity dryer. I pressed the start button and nothing happened but a humming sound for about 3-4 seconds. Then when the start button is pressed again nothing happens. After a while I tried unplugging the dryer and plugging it back, in the dryer worked again; however, the next time I tried to start it the humming sound happened again and it would not start.. The drum inside does not turn when this happens, but if you get lucky and it starts then the drum turns and everything is working. I took apart the dryer and my only conclusion is that the motor is bad, but it doesn't make sense if it works every now and then. What do you think?
The motor starting circuit is failing. Confirm this by giving the drum a push start when it hums. Most likely, the centrifugal switch on the motor is sticking (due to lint buildup) or broken. It has a mechanical component that operates an electrical switch. Check the mechanical operation, then check the switch. Also, check that the motor electrical connector is seated completely.

I'd sure start by making sure the belt isn't broken. You can usually see the belt with a flashlight after accessing the panel (some are in front, others in the rear) - don't go probing around bare armed without unplugging the unit....
SOURCE: Dryer sometimes works and sometimes doesn't, what's the problem?
i have a feeling that it's a fault in the power chord, take it out and double check. it would make sense if it only work now and then after you have plugged it back in because it could have made the wires touch again to make it work
