try adjusting the brightness knob on the system. i once had that same problem with mine. The ccfl tube (the main battery drain problem in most portables) might be burnt out or something. You can replace it with LED's i think.

might need a new headphone jack due to rough handling or a new volume pot. try plugging in headphones and wriggling them gently to see if you get sound, if that does not work try fiddling the volume knob, whichever gives a burst of sound will show you which needs to be replaced.

This is an easy repair, if you are used to working with a 15 watt solderin iron, and have a little experience with solderin small parts.
The sound board needs new capacitors, it is a common failure. I believe there are 6 of them, and the cost should be under $10.
This repair works well, but the capacitors that are in the display secton can go out too, at a later time. If you get to the oint where you must tilt the display at an angle to view, the caps are probably failing. Again, it is a matter of just replacing the caps.
