This is usually due to old capacitors that need to be replaced on the sound board. Follow this tutorial to replace them.

Cheers!

try adjusting the brightness knob on the system. i once had that same problem with mine. The ccfl tube (the main battery drain problem in most portables) might be burnt out or something. You can replace it with LED's i think.

SOURCE: my sega game gear sound has no sound how can i fix it!

might need a new headphone jack due to rough handling or a new volume pot. try plugging in headphones and wriggling them gently to see if you get sound, if that does not work try fiddling the volume knob, whichever gives a burst of sound will show you which needs to be replaced.

SOURCE: how to fix the sound on a sega game gear 2110

Hi Jeremy,
This is an easy repair, if you are used to working with a 15 watt solderin iron, and have a little experience with solderin small parts.
The sound board needs new capacitors, it is a common failure. I believe there are 6 of them, and the cost should be under $10.

This repair works well, but the capacitors that are in the display secton can go out too, at a later time. If you get to the oint where you must tilt the display at an angle to view, the caps are probably failing. Again, it is a matter of just replacing the caps.
Here are two videos that detail the repairs.
Good luck!

I have 1985 Sega hang on......plays but won't

I don't think Hang On has a DIP switch for gear shifting or speed, it sounds like you may need to calibrate or replace some of the controls. Here is a link to the owner's manual.
