SOURCE: Adding RAM

If it has 4 slots and supports 2Gb max with 2 slots currently populated with 2 x 256mb chips you'll need to remove both those chips and install 4 x 512mb chips to reach the max of 2 Gb.

SOURCE: sony vaio desktop R vgc

The problem will be with Operating System, Processor over heat, or The RAM

Clean the cooling assembly and apply good heat compound on the CPU

Change other RAM and Re- load the OS.

8gb ram for a sony vgc-ra820g

I usually browse to 4allmemory.com and let them scan the system (see "Check My System"). They can usually tell me how many slots, how much ram is installed, the max ram I can install, and will usually offer chip options at a competitive price... http://www.4allmemory.com/

Sony vgcra820g when you turn it on power light comes on other lights show its running then it beeps twice and that is the end wont do anything else

I believe that model has AMI Bios ? so 2 beeps is parity circuit failure
so your looking at ram failure/non compliant or suspect motherboard.
if your machine has more than one ram set in, you can try them one at a time (dont rule out both being faulty rare but possible) I always advise anti static wrist band to be worn on handling any component, and ensure the machine is totally unplugged, a 110% safe to work on.
hope this helps, let me know if i can help further
