If the copmuter appears to bootup and the hard disk LED id flashing then :-
You could have a faulty inverter or a CCFL lamp, To determine if you have a LCD screen, inverter or video card problem, read this and follow these instructions. Defective CCFL backlight, it may have the following symptom: Screen flashs on red/pink and off. Picture stays on in red and slowly be come normal. Picture flickering with dim display or appear black. Picture flickering on and off. All these symptoms indicate that the LCD backlight lamp (CCFL Lamp) has reached the end of the life and all you need to do is replacing the CCFL lamp. Connect an external monitor to your laptop and power the monitor up first then the laptop, if you see the normal Windows images then the video card and laptop is OK and the problem is definitely the backlight. Dim image and/or dark display on the laptop's LCD screen indicates a faulty LCD backlight and it could be the inverter that supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp or it is the CCLF lamp is nearly burnt out or burnt out, most likely this is the case. The inverter can be replaced easily but the CCLF lamp is more time consuming and requires soldering skills. Check out www.lcdparts.net for parts, repair service and DIY info.
I realize this is an old post, but I have the same issue. I hooked up to an external monitor and it is still a black screen. Does this indicate the video card is bad? If it's really a problem related to the OS: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/why-is-my-screen-black-when-i-start-windows-7
anyway the easier way is to push F8 at boot and choose the lower resolution as explained here http://mintywhite.com/vista/screen-goes-black-after-changing-the-resolution/
When I turn on my Acer 6930 the screen will stay black but all f the buttons come n to show tht it is running. Nthing happens it is just a blank screen. an anyone help me with this issue?
Unplug the unit, and remove the battery. This will shut the machine off completely. You do not need to let the battery die out. Then power the unit on again. If the issue is gone, consider turning off hibernation ( power options inside control panel)
If you can shine a light into the screen and faintly make out the images? Then it's probably the inverter/backlight board, not too expensive or difficult to replace in most cases. Let us know.
I suggest you check the settings of your bios. Normally this happens if your Hard drive is unreadable. Change the settings of the boot function to first boot on Hard disk and try to disable all other bootable hardwares like CD or network card.
