Shift key not functioning.

I had the same problem with SHIFT ASDF
After months of hopeless searching I just tried something simple which finally worked. (Windows XP)
Start--Control Panel--Keyboard--Speed Tab
Move the Repeat Delay slider button to the far left and click apply
Repeat for the other 2 sliders
Move Repeat Delay to the 3rd notch...click apply
Move Repeat Rate to half way...click apply
Move Cursor Blink rate up to nearly fast...click apply
Click OK
All my SHIFT keys worked from then on.
Hope this helps other people

What is "FN" key

Most laptop keyboards have a key marked "FN" or "fn". This is just another shift key, like the shift, control, and alt keys. If the instructions say something like "Press fn+F1" then press and hold the fn key, press and release the F1 key, then release the fn key. Exactly the same type of procedure as when the instructions say something like "Press Control+P".

Instead of getting the @ symbol when I press shift +2 i get "

you need to hold down ctrl and function on the left side of your keyboard, and then hit the shift key on the right side of your keyboard. Then let go of right shift while still holding down the control and function keys, and then hit right shift again.

these blue keys are french keys. if you change your keyboard settings to english US or UK, it will get rid of the blue functions, but for some reason, they tend to turn themslves back on again after time. Most likely due to automatic updates followed by an auto restart. Also, I find that the issue only arises if I am in my hotmail account.....no issue in Word docs.

How do I shift to the blue key functions on the keyboard

I've run into this a lot myself and personally find it annoying more than useful. While typing, your punctuation keys suddenly switch to their french functions. By defaul, Vista assigns a keyboard shortcut fo changing input languages.

This shortcut is ctrl+shift - a very easy combination to press by mistake. To solve this problem, just press crtl+shift until you're back to english. You can change this shortcut or disable it all together.

Open the control panel then click "change keyboards or other input methods" under "clock, language and region". In the window that pops up, click "change keyboards..." then select the "advanced key settings" tab. This is where you can edit and disable language related shortcuts. To change one, click on the profile and then click "change key sequence". Under "switch keyboard layout", select "unassigned" to disable that shortcut.
