Question about Samsung BD-P1000

Open Question

No picture when playing normal DVD Video on BD-P1000

We bought a Samsung BD-P1000 Blu-ray player in the Netherlands, so we are able to play also our normal 'Dutch Region' DVD-video's here in the States. A year ago we bought a Sony Bravia 1080p LCD TV in the States. In between we are using a Yamaha RX-V1700 receiver. In that way, we are able to avoid the PAL/NTSC problem. The Yamaha is able to translate our PAL DVD’s into NTSC. We know for sure that this is working, because we used a very simple PHILIPS DVD player until a month ago. But, because this PHILIPS DVD player is only able to upgrade to 1080i, we decided (as real movie freaks) to have the better Samsung Blu-Ray so we can go to 1080p (next to playing Blu-Ray disks of course).
Back to the problem: where the PHILIPS was able to play back our normal DUTCH/EUROPEAN REGION DVD-VIDEO'S, we have no sound and just some stripes and colours in the left above corner of the screen. Obviously there is a translating problem, somewhere down the line. Is this a software problem? Is there an upgrade available for this BD-P1000 player? We don't know. We tried the service desk of Samsung back in the Netherlands. But they do not seem able to solve it. They didn't call us back jet. Maybe you guys could help us out here.
Appreciate it, thanks very much

The player currently rejects all discs with the error message "This disc cannot be played". When I first got the machine (used on ebay) it played some discs and rejected others. It is less than 12 months old but cannot be repaired under warranty because I am not the first owner.
PS I have bee quoted more than AUD1000 for a replacement drive (not including installation)

SOURCE: Black Bars on all blu ray movies

Hi icmjrtdr,

Having black bars displayed when watching a Blu-Ray disc is a common occurrence, even with a widescreen television.

You may have heard or seen aspect ratios of 4:3 or 16:9. 4:3 is the ratio of a traditional television that is nearly square. 16:9 is the ratio of most widescreen televisions currently marketed. The reason that even with a 16:9 television Blu-Ray discs are displaying black bars is that many of these discs contain footage that has not been reformatted for television. The screen in a movie theater is even wider than 16:9, and rather than trim the ends, most Blu-Ray discs maintain the entire picture.

Depending on the options available in your particular television, you may be able to find a zoom setting that trims the ends and removes the black bars. It is up to you if you would rather see black bars with the entire picture or lose a small amount of the picture on each side for a full-screen experience.

Hope this helps,

SOURCE: DVD playback distorted in Samsung BD-P1600 Blu-ray Player

I called Samsung with the same issue. After verifying the latest firmware was installed, they suggested I send the unit in for service. I expect it back sometime this week, and DVD playback will be the first thing I test.

SOURCE: blu ray disk wont play.

this could be a failure in the processing secttion of the card. since this is only months old it is important that you take this for warranty claims and get the immediate attention. It could be also expensive if it is out of warranty, possible failure of the proccs board.

My BD530 player doesn't play all movies clearly. Some come cover good others re all snowy

When properly connected to a High Definition display or TV, Blu-Ray Disks (BD) should play crystal clearly. Inserting an old "non-Blu-Ray" disk (or the original "DVD") in the Blu-Ray player will display a comparatively "fuzzy" picture. This is the difference between High Definition and Standard Definition. A "BD player" can not "upgrade" the picture quality on DVDs to that of a BD or High Definition picture.

Rent, purchase or choose Blu-Ray Disks (BD) whenever a choice is offered to view the High Definition version of a movie or video. Selecting the DVD version will provide the lower quality or Standard Definition version of the same movie or video.

Check the covers or disk itself to determine if the movie or video is in DVD or BD format. That will tell you what you can expect for picture quality.

I hope this helps & good luck! Please rate my reply - thank you.

My samsung blue ray will not play a blu ray disc at all ,it will play a normal dvd ,wtf !!!!!!

This is all to common problem and indicates a Laser Pickup Assembly issue. The blue ray require more precision and velocity to produce the higher resolution that is demanded to play them, either way the assembly must be replaced or a new machine bought.

BD-P1000 Update Solution
The solution that worked for me: I went to and downloaded the Samsung BD-P1000 player's firmware update to my desktop. When opened, I was directed to"burn" a DVD on my computer. I then inserted the new DVD in my Blu-Ray player. The player automatically checked and confirmed player model number and registration and uploaded information from the DVD and the update was complete. The BD-P1000 then flawlessly played the rented Blu-Ray disc of "The Scorpion King".
Thank You Samsung!
