You have to be sure the computer has the correct software to recognise the hardware connected to an USB slot and can work with it. From Windows 7 and up, for most hardware that is certified with Microsoft, you can download the drivers from Microsoft. Lots of hardware is recognised when connected and will initiate a download from Microsoft. But not all hardware will do so and not all hardware is compatible with the new operating systems.
So to make sure your hardware is compatible, check the manual (or box where the hardware came in) and find out, what you have to do so it will work on your computer.
For older equipment you can't find drivers, because most producers of hardware, don't work on certification of old hardware. They only develop and work for certification with Microsoft for the parts they want to sell now.
