Are hp laptop and dell monitor compatible?

It could be that the monitor is defective. Try using it in a different computer. All monitors are compatible on any computer.

most monitors will work you will need to connect the monitor with a vga lead and a power lead

You need to check the device manager for any "!" symbols. They are most likely there for your audio and video drivers. This means that the current drivers installed are not compatible. See below for the correct drivers.

no dell have set up there computers so you cant use othe appliances that arnt dell. so im sorry for the inconveince.

There will be a function key that allows you to swap what monitor the display comes up on. On my HP its the blue (fn) function key with f4. This should swap display between laptop monitor and external or show up on both.
Other things to check are that the projector is powered on and plugged in before the laptop powers up.
Also check resolution of laptop display it may not be compatible with the projector.

If it's the drivers for the laptop, you can find them at Dell's support site. If it's the drivers for the monitor (some monitors need their own drivers in order to work) you can find them at the monitor manufacturer's site or driverguide.com
