  • rjsymmes has the most accurate solution. Start with a battery replacement. Next course of action is to use a Bootable Media Source (Windows Disk or Recovery Disk) to see if the laptop responds and can have the Start Up repaired. If a Boot Media fails, then examine RAM, Hard Drive removal, then boot. Last resort Motherboard.

Try this... to see if your video card is bad...
Connect your laptop to an external monitor and press the Function key plus F5 on the laptop... if your OS shows up on the monitor screen, then you have a bad video card...

If its not the video, Bad Ram might be the cause.
And worst case.. Need Motherboard replaced...

SOURCE: flashing battery icon

The machine is telling you the battery is not charging or is otherwise no good.

The battery for this unit is subject to a recall, if it has part #OU091 or W1435. This recall started in October 08. Go to:

http://www.dellbatteryprogram.com/

for more info.

Alternatively, bring your power supply to a Radio Shack, and make sure it is putting out the requisite 19V DC power.

Model S400CA-CA006H, Power ON, only back lit blank display. Battery icon is green while the BULB icon LED is orange in colour.

Since you have been using the upgraded version of windows for a couple of months I would say the two incidents aren't connected.
If win 8.1 was the root cause the problem would have presented itself shortly after the upgrade.
It sounds more like the cable from the motherboard to the monitor is either lose or broken. After all it runs through the part you move everytime you open, close or adjust the laptop, so it is in a exposed situation.
Normally it is quite easy to fix, but you need to take it to a hardware repair store.

My colour printouts from new Samsung CLP-310 do not match original WORD 2000 docs colours (or compared to HP deskjet. Is there a MS patch for this?

Hello,

There is an update for your printer. This is a firmware update. A firmware update, rewrites code located on the printer's main system board. The latest update is dated 10/17/08.

Flashing firmware does not have a go back element or undo, so it is really important that we verify your model and what seiries of printer you have. I suspect you have a CLP-300 Series printer and that the 310 of the 300 just describes some features added or left off and even who you purchased it from, in many cases.

Please look at these two photos and then post the data off the name plate for your model number in particular.

406eb47.jpg ccb435d.jpg

You will notice there are two lines to include in your reply.
1.) The Model: (first line)
2.) M/C entry (second to last entry in this photo of the label.

Once you verify this and I post the firmware update link for you, you will need to follow the instructions I include below.

Regards,
Worldvet

Samsung has released a new Software upgrade file for print quality, automatic error recovery, and toner save mode on color laser printers.

Procedure to Set-up Download Mode on Your Printer - CLP-300 series

If possible, be certain the Printer is connected to a BackUPS

Firmware Update Confirmation Instruction
