I am not 100% sure on this but I do know that most printers and scanners when straight out of the box sometimes have tape or some foam that they use to keep the bits that move around from moving. I would check your manual from end to end and if you dont find anything in it then I would contact tech support for Canon as it may be that this is a bug of some sort that they may already have a fix for.
I have many years repairing Canon scanners and here is my suggestion to you.
If you are positive the lock switch is unlocked then I think what happened is the scanner inside the scanner is off its track an can not move. I would remove the glass on the top of your flat bed scanner to gain access to the scanner lens then I would try and move the scanner lens manually with the power off to the scanner. If it does move freely then I would think you have a bad scanner lens. If it doesnt move freely try and reposition the lens back on to its track. They some times jump off there track from shipping.
Ok it can be either 2 things: The FIRST is if you have not UNLOCKED the scanner lock switch. The scanner lock switch is a switch that keeps the scanner assembly frozen in place so that when you move your scanner from room to room or apartment to house, the scanner wont freely move around the unit causing it to be dammaged.
To unlock the Scanner lock switch just lift your document cover and look for the swtch on the LEFT hand side of the scanner's glass bed.
SECOND: IF the scanner lock swtich is set at UNLOCK, then your scanner assembly is broken and needs to be replaced. You must then send it to Cannon or any Mulitfunction printer repair place.
The only thing that usually causes a scanner error of this type is either a scanner failure or the transport lock. Locate the lock and make sure it is in the unlocked position. Lock and unlock a few times leaving it in the unlocked position then power the scanner off and on again.
hi dear ,
check out the moving button on the back side of the scanner or that should be in any side too change that button to unlock side.
now it never give you any warning.
Actually a very common problem. Try the following:
1. Power down then re-power up the scanner.
2. Try slightly moving scanner. Sometimes a small change works to fix.
3. Change one of your scan setting to flatbed scan (not adf). Do a test scan under this setting. This will usually kick start scanner unit to unlock.
4. Last resort, by does also work...give it a medium slap on the side, sometimes unjams the scanner light.
5. Super last resort, power down over night, it almost always works the next day. (could be that lock up is heat related to scan lamp, dont know but just a guess).
Excellent scanner, so worth the effort to try these fixes.
