Check the headphones. They might be burnt up. Test it out with another set. If that doesn't work, you can change the settings of the ipod while connected to itunes. Go to options, settings, and change the volume max to higher.

Volume wont turn up

Resetting the volume limit on your iPod Nano affects everything you listen to, from music to audio books. You can adjust the volume for each individual item on your Nano using the click wheel, but the highs and lows of the sound will depend on the overall volume limit setting. Volume levels will vary with different ear buds and headphones, and using external devices like docking stations to play your iPod Nano will also cause variation in the volume.

Instruction:

1 Press any button on your iPod Nano's click wheel and turn it on. Press the "menu" button at the top of the click wheel until you reach the iPod menu.

2 Select "Settings" from this menu by scrolling down until "Settings" is highlighted, then click the center button.
3
Select "Playback" from the menu choices that show up.

4 Select "Volume Limits." You will reach a screen with a speaker icon and dots indicating the level of volume your iPod is currently set on.
5
Scroll the wheel up or back to adjust the volume limits. Press the center button and you will have the option to lock in your settings by selecting a four-digit combination lock. This is not a necessary step; you can click on "done" and finish. Setting the combination allows you to have more control over any future changes to your iPod's volume limits. Scroll the click wheel to select your combination. Press the center button and you will revisit the volume limits; adjust it as you like and press the center button.

How to Reset the Volume Limit on the iPod Nano

Tips & Warnings
If you set up a combination and forget it, you can reset your iPod Nano and start over again. Resetting will not lose any of your downloads, but you will need to restore or reset many of the settings you initially chose when you first set up your iPod.
Changing the volume limits on your iPod Nano covers everything on your player, but the sound levels for songs, audio books and shows will vary based on how they were recorded.

I transferred music to my mp4, however I cannot hear it when it plays. I know it was transferred correctly, but the music bar moves/plays but no sound is heard. My headphones are new.

Try a different set of headphones, if there is still no sound, check the volume limit on the iPod: http://support.apple.com/kb/TA38403?viewlocale=en_US
if that still does not help try resetting it by pressing the MENU and PLAY buttons simultaneously for a couple of seconds, I hope that did work. But, if it didn't, try doing the diagnostic in it to find out if it is a faulty jack: http://www.wikihow.com/Hack-an-iPod-Nano-3G Hope it is just headphones!

Volume problems

If you're willing to take a risk.... theres rockbox.org download/install that. It will pump an extra 25% or more volume out.... But the layout is different and takes some getting used to...

also you can buy some better headphones... the kind that cover the whole ear and not those little ear bud things!
