My question is related to the previous thread. However id like to reitterate the problem so that whoever stumbles upon this thread on google could help them immensely. I bought my mitsubishi montero sport brand new and just last year I heard some annoying screeching noise coming from the condenser fan (atleast thats where I thought it was coming from). Went on ebay and bought a brand new condenser fan and installed it. It did the screeching noise. So im ruling out the condenser fan at fault. My question is: could it be the aC fan belt tensioner? or could it be that the wiring harness is beat and old and might not be providing electric current to the condenser fan? I live in a hot dry climate state. Or could it be that condenser is going bad? When the screeching noises occur, the cold air blowing diminishes. I just had the freon filled and theres no leaks fyi. Appreciate any info. Thanks

Ian,
There are two fans in a vehicle, One is in the engine compartment and is for the radiator. The other is in the passenger compartment and it runs the heater and air conditioner air flow from the plenum. The condenser is near the radiator and the evaporator is in the plenum. Condensers don't fail. Neither do evaporators. If the squeal is coming from the engine compartment when the air conditioner is turned on, the problem is either the belt to the COMPRESSOR or the CLUTCH on the compressor.

Hey thank you Brad Brown, u were actually pretty close to what I wanna hear. The other solution posted by a random person top was not very helpful but your solution is much more realistic. I checked the tension on the AC belt and its pretty snug, not tight, but just enough. However im not ruling the belt out still. 1.) Could it be that I need to replace the tension pulley?? Its still blowing cold air but im worried cause when it does the screeching noise, it halts the condenser fan (smaller fan) to a complete stop (hence me buying a fan on ebay $60 worth) and cold air no more. Its like its intermittent. Next 2.) If its the clutch, am I doomed to buy the whole compressor (which is expensive) or can I just get the clutch fixed? Can u address to those two (2) points ive mentioned. Thank you kindly

Mitsubishi montero sport
No year, , no engine size.
10 points for stating symptoms , few do here.
better would be. my engine bay makes noise.
who can I isolate and find the cause of my noise.

non of this guessing is needed.
you drop belts to see if they make noise.
or unplug the fan to see if the noise stops.
and use a stetchoscope ($5) to find the source.
so does is make noise with the A/C off, (shoe drops)
all belts can be dropped (accesories)
A/C and P/S and even water pump belt can be dropped. for say 3 minutes run time, dead cold.

top causes,
1: bad belts. bad old belts love to slip and make noise.
2: sometimes the accessoriers are bad, the bearings in side
are seized, or near and the belt slips, no matter what.
we feel them. each pulley we feel the for spin force, and loose.
we stethoscope all running pulleys. it take 5min to do this.
if they make noise, THEY ARE BAD.
3: the A/C compressor could make noise, with the clutch energized or not. (if energized the compressor making noise is bad, if not energized that means the clutch bearings are bad, again the stetchocope
finds this fact in 5min flat.

$5 whole bucks.

P/S pump bad.
water pump bad, they last about 100k and bearing go bad.

not posting the engine size, means i cant look up
all parts on front of engine, including IDLER , pulleys.
most cars have 2 or more engines, some have 10, (land cruisers>)

try to post the engine. and we can show exact parts.

eg: cam belt shredding if it even has one?

see
Peripheral to engine block noises (accessories, etc)
http://www.fixkick.com/NOISE.html

there is no reason to guess. the simple tests PROVE
who or what is making noise. for sure.
(even , inside engine or inside engine, too)

some mech, spray belt dressing on the belts while schreeching.
if it stops .bingo, but is usually not a long term fix.

SOURCE: mitsubishi montero sport AWD...AC blows

It may also be the bearing on the pully of the AC or the main pulley. It will be best to take a look at it.

Where is relay 384 on a 2006 VW Passat?

This is such an old thread but if you or come one else has stumbled back upon this thread:
When you pull the fuse panel cover off of the drivers side and you see the fuse panel, if you look directly above that panel mount you will see a small-ish hole that goes to the internals of the dash. When you get a flashlight and look in there you will see a relay panel and the closest one to you will be the 384 relay. Most are numbered on a VW/ German Engineered autos but if not that is where it'll be.
