Remove the ribbon and correction tape, type a few words make corrections check the gear that drives the correction tape to be sure it is moving (you might mark it with a dab of white out) If it moves then your L/O tape is bad. I've found that some generic ones don't fully engage the drive gear.

Smith Corona XD 5500 - cant make work buttons except a few

If your Smith Corona XD 5500 typewriter is only producing specific characters and some buttons are not working, there are a few potential issues you can investigate:
  1. Check for Stuck Keys: Make sure none of the keys are physically stuck or jammed. Press each key to see if they respond properly and if any are consistently stuck in the down position.
  2. Clean the Typewriter Mechanism: Over time, typewriters can accumulate dust, debris, or dried ink, which may impede the movement of keys. Use compressed air to blow out any dust and try to clean the typewriter mechanism.
  3. Inspect the Ribbon and Correction Tape: Check the typewriter ribbon and correction tape. If the ribbon is improperly installed or the correction tape is stuck, it can affect the functioning of the keys. Ensure that the ribbon and correction tape are correctly threaded.
  4. Check for Mechanical Issues: Inspect the internal components for any visible signs of damage or misalignment. Ensure that all the moving parts are functioning smoothly. If you notice any broken or misaligned parts, you may need to seek professional repair.
  5. Verify the Keyboard Switch: Some typewriters have a switch to toggle between different character sets or functions. Check the user manual for your specific model to see if there's a switch that might be affecting the keyboard.
  6. Test the Typewriter in Manual Mode: Most typewriters have a manual mode where you can type without the ribbon or correction tape engaged. Test the typewriter in manual mode to see if the issue persists. This can help determine if the problem is related to the typing mechanism or the printing elements.
  7. Consult the User Manual: Refer to the user manual for your Smith Corona XD 5500 for troubleshooting tips and information about the specific features of your typewriter.
  8. Professional Repair: If the issue persists and you're unable to identify or resolve the problem, it may be necessary to seek professional repair. Contact a typewriter repair specialist or a local office equipment repair service for assistance.
Remember that working with vintage typewriters may require specialized knowledge, and attempting to disassemble the typewriter without proper expertise can lead to further damage. If in doubt, it's advisable to seek professional assistance for repairs.

Why won't correction tape advance? Works for a few words then gets stuck.

There are 2 types of correction tapes, a sticky type and a non sticky type. The sticky type is for the IBM selectric series. If you have print wheel, you need the non sticky type. Touch the tape and see if it sticks to your finger, if it does, you have the wrong tape.

I have replaced the ribbon cartridge and for some reason the entire cartridge will not sit back down in place. In other words, the letter wheel strikes the "erase" cartridge. I have tried and...

When the T/W is turned on does the ribbon go up and down or does it just stay in one place? Try it without the correction tape attached if it works then the correction tape is installed wrong. If it doesn't check the plug on the ribbon motor and give it a shot of WD40 on the upper and lower bearings (it is located under the ribbon deck at thr R. front.

After typing a few words the typewriter starts to type all sorts of characters and symbols . If I reset it or turn it off, it will start out typing the correct letters for a few words again but then it...

Remove the printwheel and look for bent or broken spokes, look for debris in the P/W area, try it without the correction tape, if you have the wrong type tape or it is twisted there will be a problem.

Cannot get tape to eject

It could be a couple of different issues. These things could help.
(1) Power OFF the camera, remove battery then replace the battery, power up the cam and try to eject tape again. Nothing? try...
(2) Gently press inward on the tape cover with both thumbs a few times. Then, while pressing gently inward with one hand, press the release/eject-tape function until you hear a click or release sound. Then, if it doesn't open automatically, gently "help" open the hatch.

If it remains stuck, after follwing these steps a few times it would be my guess that perhaps the camera has been dropped in a way that jammed the mechanism controlling the eject function.

TIPS that may prevent having eject problems: When loading tape, be sure to insert the tape correctly and slowly, makeing sure the tape is placed properly. Gently press on the specific location indicated to close the tape holder, and wait for the tape to "seat" properly before closing any other part of the tape cover or hatch mechanism. Taking a few extra seconds when loading the tape can save extended frustration later.

Types wrong letters

Remove the correction tape and try it. If it works you either have it on wrong or it is a tacky L/O tape they will give it fits.

Correction Tape

Two possibilities, one the correction tape is twisted and the wrong side is .facing the paper. The shinny side should be facing you, the dull side facing the paper. Second possibility you must make sure the ribbon is compatible with the correction tape. There are 2 types of ribbons. A correctable one (orange or yellow knob) and a multi strike (blue or purple knob on ribbon cartridge). The lift off correction tape (orange or yellow spools) only works with the correctable ribbon and the cover up correction tape (blue) works with the multistrike ribbon.

Correction tape

Does the correction tape move? Does it lift up to the proper height? If it does both of these try advancing it a few inches the tapes get old and the exposed portion won't work. If this helps but it isn't real good get a fresh (not one that has been sitting on the shelf for years and thes will help.

IBM Easystrike Cartridges

The ribbon cartridges can be pried apart they are pressed together, getting it apart is easier than putting back together.
Next time you have to install a ribbon advance it by hand for a foot or so as old ribbons tend to stick to themselves.

Hope this helps

Correction Tape

Check the way the correct tape is installed. I have seen people twist them around the guide backwards and the correction material is facing away from the paper. Also can you see the correction tape lifting up?
