SOURCE: Bose 321 DVD drive failure
Found another help site similar to FixYa where a person had posted that they successfully replaced their failed DVD ROM drive in their BOSE 3-2-1 Series I unit with a later model Toshiba SD-M1712 drive. There are 2 plastic trim bits and the metal DVD drive unit cover that need to be swapped between the old drive and the new PC type drive to complete the repair. I located and ordered a new drive and spent last evening removing the old drive from the BOSE. To remove the old drive all that is really necessary is to remove the lid from the BOSE unit and pop off a black steel holdown assembly across the top of the failed drive. Once that is done the old just drive lifts out and the replacement is virtually the same as swapping out a drive in your PC. I am awaiting arrival of the replacement OEM drive ($25) from some place in Texas. This just may work. BOSE wants hundreds of bucks and several weeks to repair their crappy unit. I will never purchase BOSE again. I had to also purchase a power supply in years past for this very lightly used unit and that was $300 and a lot of aggravation using the BOSE repair system. I have trouble just throwing this unit away because we spent $1000 hard earned $'s to buy the "best". I was certainly fooled. If this doesn't work I'm only out $25.
