About 12 weeks ago, after turning on the TV, the picture would stay fuzzy for a few minutes then suddenly clear up. It's been taking progressively longer, until it now takes 30-45 minutes for the picture to clear. This affects the menu, as well as DVD play. Can it be fixed, or do I go shopping?

You have a defective light engine and Hitachi knows about it. We just went through this and here's what you need to do. Call Hitachi's customer relations department (not regular customer service) at 800-654-7013 and tell them what your set is doing and that it's a bad light engine. They will at first act like they are unaware of this problem but they know about it. They will give you the names of some certified dealer in your area. Once the tech comes out and confirms the probelm, call Hitachi back at the number listed above and they will call the dealer to confirm the problem. Once they confirm that it's a bad light engine, Hitachi will send the part to the dealer and HITACHI will cover the part (around $1500).
Here's the kicker, if you're not still under warranty, most of us are not, they will ask you to pay the install. Our install was $400...worth it to us on a $3600 tv we've only had 3 years and have loved. YOU DO NOT have to be under warranty for Hitachi to cover this expense part. Another issue out there floating around, DO NOT let any dealer or department store tell you that you will have to pay for this part once Hitachi sends it to them. They are getting the part from Hitachi for free and if the dealer/department store trys this, I would report them to Hitachi and the BBB. Please deal only with the Hitachi customer relations department. Customer service will not get you anywhere. Our situation with Hitachi went very well. Good Luck:)

jansen6pack- I am currently repairing the same tv, what I found is that the video pak is going.I have checked pricing and the unit is about 500 bucks, but if you take it to a repair shop they may be able to repair it or send it away for repair. It may be worth the estimate charge. cooltekFeb.18/08

this is from a tech tip I got that should help.
No Picture:
1. The Power Supply may not be producing the correct voltages.
2. The Digital Module (Digi-Main) may not be producing correct
turn on commands (Power 1 and 2).
3. The Logic PWB may not be supplying the correct Vs/Va turn on
commands (Vsago and Vcego).
The Panel can have a defect of two natures.
1. The panel is shorted.
2. The panel is defective, but not presenting a short.
3. Y-SUS and/or X-SUS may be defective (Shorted and or nonworking

It sounds like a shutdown circuit is being activated. This is normal in cases where the power supply id drawing excessive current. I would suggest that you get this looked at by a qualified professional. This is because this problem may be in the power supply and the voltages can get dangerous in this section of the TV set.
In any event if this is a power supply problem chances are the technician will just have to replace the power supply. Which should cost from 150-250 dollars.
I hope this helps
