The autofocus in unstable
SOURCE: lens auto focus sometimes does not work.
First make sure contacts on lens are clean ( see enclosed pic #2 ) . If this does not solve the problem the ultrasonic motor may be faulty pic #1.( sometimes switching on but sometimes not , will have to be replaced , unless there is a bad connection between the motor and lens pc board )

Hello,
Unfortunately, unless you suspect dirt in the lens (been taking pictures on the beach maybe? ;), this sounds like autofocus motor failure.
Even if you manage to source the replacement motor, swapping it is a really fiddly operation.
I would suggest selling the lens for spares on ebay and getting a new one.
They are fairly cheap these days. I recommend getting the IS version - it's much better than the original, although build quality is similar.
Good luck,
Raf
SOURCE: Auto focus not working?
1st u reset the factory setting and then u see the lense is correctly fitted or not and the autofocus option is working or the manual focusing is there or not
SOURCE: Autofocus Does Not Work
there is couple of possibilities like wise when you zoom lens manualy and can you heard the hard noise then could be AF unit itself faulty. AF unit gear is gone.
could be AF shaft broken thats why not focusing
for that please bring to canon service center

I see this same problem occuring all over the internet on Canon lenses. Autofocus not working any longer. For some stupid reason the lense will lock up and quit autofocus while other lenses will work fine. A light pull on the lense focus ring away from the camera body will give a noticable pop or click which unlocks the jammed lense. Try it if you are having troubles with your autofocus. This is a very common problem and worth giving it a try.
