That was a reset, try a relearn. You'll need a charger on the battery. Ten minutes on, thirty seconds off. Do this three times, then try to start. If that doesn't work, then it has to go on a scanner to see what happened. Sparks like yours usually don't hurt anything. But they can spike and burn a computer. The chances are really good that there will be a plug, either hidden close by in the vehicle, or inside the tailgate.
If you already have the replacement tailgate you should be able to determine how it connects, so the actual replacement process (in a perfect world) should be a matter of unplug the old, plug in the new.
