SOURCE: Correct way to align timing marks

hi -- the timing marks on a twin cam are tricky!! heres how- turn the motor over to tdc on the bottom pulley, this will align two marks on the lower cog-----now on the top cog,it has an obvious mark near the teeth-- well disregard this for now!! the cog has a hole in it,in one of the spokes, well this goes at 12 o,clock and lines up with a mark you will see on the housing! now if you are right you will see the mark near the teeth is at around 4,oclock---i just did one and it is right--cheers

The timing could be 180 degrees out you will have to do it all over again. Bring #1 cylinder upto TDC check the distributor rotor arm that it is pointing to #1 plug wire, It is important that the cams are on the intake stroke and not on the exhaust stroke. The crank is no big deal just make sure the marks are lined up.

Is there a timing belt and performance difference on the 1.6L 16V engine type ? i was told that there's something to do with E/I position? sidekick/vitara 1994 lwb 4 doors if it matters.

no, the E and marks are for 2 engines.
E mark for G16B (16valve MPI engine)
I and E marke are for the twin cam engine, (see link for deeper facts)
see?
if you use the wrong marks, the engine will not run
and compression falls by 1/2 from 180 psi to 90 or less.

the G16A is different 8v head, yours is the 95HP, 16valve head.

Hi where are the timeing marks on a 1.6 16v astra

nice set of wheels ,cant remember since i done the last one?? right it either has locating lugs on the cam between the cam lobes on no1 ,or horizontal slots on back of cams ,or is that an escort ?' or 8mm hole in cam wheel that locks into the head with a drill bit or an bolt?' or was that VW .If not sure then both inlet and exhaust valves are closed and the valves on no4 open with cams on teh rock so to speak ,then look for the timing marks and next time bring engine to no1 and mark it with white paint
