Question about Sony KDS-R50XBR1 50" HDTV
SOURCE: Sony Bravia KDS-R50XBR1
Thanks for the suggestion. I did find elsewhere on this site that my particuliar unit has an "optical block" service enhancement warranty issue that entitles me to a free repair.

I too have a Sony KDS-R60XBR1 tv and the issue that you are experiencing is due to one of your fans in the rear of the tv is not working. The tv automatically shuts off in protective mode. Make sure the POWER/STANDBY light is blinking and not the lamp light below it. Is the power/standby blinking 4 times in red? If, yes then its a fan that needs to be replaced. If its the lamp light blinking then you need to replace the lamp. The lamp is easy to replace by ordering the lamp either from Sony for $250 or find it cheaper for approx. $150 from other DLP sources and replace youself by following your manual. I hope this helps you.

I have the same problem it's the optical block going bad. Most expensive part in the TV. Repair cost $850 - $1200. Big Sony class action law suit against Sony. Settled out of court with extended warranties to June of 2009. I just called them and I am getting a run around. Recently offered to sell me another set at a discounted price but it's taking a month to get it replaced. They are in no hurry to respond at this point.
