My night owl comes up with a bad disk warning and i can not record.

This is a security camera DVR device with a hard disk. As such, it is subject to possible disk errors or even drive failure. It may be possible to repair sectors or reformat the drive. It that fails, drive replacement may be necessary.

My dvr worked fine for several months and then all of sudden it stopped recording Could it be that the hard drive just stopped recording because of failure?

Hi there,
the HDD is a common component to fail in a DVR.
The DVR Itself should actually tell you the status of the storage device if you navigate the menu.

I could probably assist you remotely to find out if you like?

Hard disk is not working in dvr

The software to run the DVR was also on the original hard drive. Once you change it , that is gone. You'll need to contact the manufacturer for a proper replacement.

Hi, i put together my own computer, ive got the following components: i7 870 processor CPU 8GB RAM 2TB hard drive (two separate 1TB's) NVIDIA GTX 470 DP55KG extreme motherboard coolmaster 850w...

check the boot order in the bios settings
check the power cord is connected to the hard drive
IS it Sata or IDE hard drive cable ?
Is it a red flat 1/4 inch wide cable (SATA)
or a 50 wire wider grey cable flat ribbon (IDE)

Another more sinister cause could be the bios on the motherboard does not handle the larger 1 Tb hard drives .
Do a google search on the bios chip number to get the motherboard type and check its specs to see if it can handle larger hard drives

I bought a "My DVR Expander" to use with my DirecTV HD DVR. Does Western Digital make this expander in anything larger than 1TB? If so, where can I buy one?

Note that your DVR will treat this as "extra" storage, i.e., supplemental to its "internal" storage.

A 1 terabyte hard drive allows you to record:
  • Up to an additional 600 hours of Digital TV
  • Up to an additional 120 hours of High Definition TV
Since the largest EIDE/PATA disk-drive is 0.5 TB, the disk-drive inside the Expander must be a SATA disk-drive.

So, disassemble the unit, disconnect the SATA disk-drive, and pay about $300 to buy a "2000Gb Western Digital Caviar RE4 Raid Edition 7200RPM 64 Mb Cache 3.5 7200RPM 64 MB Cache SATA Internal HD 3 Yr Warranty WD2003FYYS".

Connect the disk-drive to its interface.
Close-up the case.
Connect your "custom" PVR expander to your DVR,
and see if your DVR will recognize the 2TB of disk-storage.

Need to get video off dvr

From the user manual page 71:
5.2 Quick Archive to CD
Archive to CD on the Disk Analysis Screen by selecting the time and date and pressing the record
button. The QuickWave Setup must be set to ON from the Archive Setup → Quick Wave Setup menu
(see section 3.15). The Archive Incident menu should appear.
1. Use the Jog to modify the time parameters and use the
Shuttle to move between the Start and Stop fields.
2. Press the Record button on the front panel when satisfied.
3. The CD Writer will open the CD tray when completed.
The video may now be viewed on any PC equipped with a CD-ROM.

Formatting disks for EDSR1600

The EverFocus EDSR Security DVRs use standard PC Parallel (PATA) hard drives. I have used ATA100 and ATA133 speeds with no problems. There are no PC-type settings required except as below. The DVR has it's own internal firmware and will format the drive to its requirements.

If you are using a SINGLE drive tray, the largest hard drive I know will work is 500 GB. Set the drive to Master and you are done with the hardware setup. (CS Select would also probably work.)

If you are using BOTH drive trays, the largest hard drive EverFocus says will work on the EDSR100 or EDSR110 is 320 GB. Set both drives to Master and you are done with the hardware setup. (CS-Select on both would also probably work.)

Do NOT set any drive to Slave!

Lock the drive trays; if you don't the DVR will not go into record.

Press the STOP key and then press the MENU button. Go into the SYSTEM menu and do a DISK RENEW. This will erase the hard drive and also prepare it for DVR recording.

Do this by using ► or ◄ to select DISK RENEW. Change NO to YES (by using ▼ or ▲) and press the ENTER button. Highlight YES again by using ► or ◄ and again press the ENTER button.

Press the MENU button to exit and reboot the DVR. Then press RECord and you should be recording.
