Is there anyway to hide the SSID when sharing internet off of a macmini?

Dear Friend,
First, you need to identified you wireless name from your wireless modem such as "HOME-229". Then after identifying the right SSID (service set identifier), enter the name in your WII follow by the right password out of your Wireless Modem. Also, make sure that your SSID in your wireless modem is broadcasting and not hiding. Some devices will simple not access online if the SSID is not broadcasting.

The SSID is the name of the network. This is a publicly broadcasted name given to the internet access point by the router, or created by the network administrator. This can be seen by just searching for wifi networks. The only time an SSID does not get shown publicly is when the network administrator hides the SSID. This is done for more security because if you cant see the network, it is much harder to break into. Hope this helps

I'll venture a guess that some file sharing or such activities are going on, using up the three guest IPs. I'd suggest upping the number of guest access in the router to something like 10, then taking it down from there. Perhaps don't broadcast SSID if you want to ensure someone is leeching your internet bandwidth, and share the name (SSID) only with your friends/guests.

To make sure that the ARCHOS can recognize the presence of the WiFi access point, go to Menu > Settings > Wireless controls > WiFi settings and then see what is listed under the section "Wi-Fi Networks". One or several WiFi access points should be listed.

If the access point you want to connect to is not listed, then it might be
• Because the router/modem is not switched on.
• Because the router/modem access point is set to not broadcast its identity (even though it is available for use). Ask the manager of the WiFi modem/router to temporarily enable the identity (SSID) broadcasting. To do so, one would have to go into the settings of the router/modem either by using the web browser or a special application program that came with the router/modem. Search for a setting that has a name something like "Hide SSID" and make sure it is off. Once this is done, the ARCHOS should recognize the access point and be able to connect to it. The ARCHOS just needs to connect once and it will "know" this access point - even when it is later "hidden". The WiFi router/modem can then be set back to "Hidden SSID". In general, hiding the SSID of your modem/router is ineffective as a security measure so you might as well just leave it on.

What you can do is hide your network name or (SSID) set it to "Do not Broadcast SSID" in your router at that point they cannot access your internet. thanks

Login in using your browser and go to the wireless settings and set-up a wireless password/key. Remember the key because each device will now need it to connect. You can also turn OFF Broadcast SSID and your network name will not be shown on anyone's device. You must remember the network name when using this method. I would change the network name (SSID) if people have connected to your router before and hide (do not broadcast) so they will not see it on their WiFi devices.

After removing your preferred network and adding it back, the network will turn to Automatic and you will be able to connect automatically into your network. Make sure to look at network properties/Connection and check "Connect when this network is in range".

Login into the Linksys router, in the wireless settings for the SSID there is a box to tick Stop SSID broadcast, save the setting and exit.

This link indicates there may be an issue with hiding the SSID in the wireless router. A security item employed by some users. IF this is the case consider broadcasting the SSID and employing WEP or WPA encryption in the wireless configuration for both the router and the adapter cards to secure the wireless connections..
