Why is there almost no output from the HK3550 Receiver, when supplied with signal input the out put side (speakers or headphones) has just a faint, faint sound output (speakers or headphones) through the left and rignt channels. No obvious signs of distress inside the machine like smoky spots or craters on circuit boards.

Check the fuses - there may be one inside the box as well. May also be a bad transformer. You can get a multi-meter at Home Depot and lookup how to check the power at the transformer.

Turn the POWER OFF and operate every control throughout its range a number of times, especially rarely-used ones like Tape Monitors and the Mute control. What is the state of the indicated but inidentified digital source? It's trying to tell you to check IT.
