Do you have 2 trippers on the dial?-- one marked 'on' and the other 'off' ? Each of these little trippers has a different cam (or bump) on them-- positioned to catch the lever that actuates the switch, and either move it to 'ON'- or to the 'OFF' position.
Can you remove the trippers, and check, (compare them side by side)- Do they have different shaped cams.. (or bumps)?
So the 'ON' tripper might be set (say for example) for 5 AM and the OFF tripper might be set for 10 PM--- and each 24 hours, as the dial rotates once a day,-- each of those bumps catch the lever, and gradually move the lever either to 'ON' or then (at 10 PM-- say) to Off. Repeating every day.
What is happening with yours?-- and what do the Cams look like?
Let us know what you find, and we can go from there
