SOURCE: Air conditioner line freezing up

Check to make sure the filter inside the air handler is clean and that no vents are closed or blocked by furnature or rugs. Check the air handler to see if the blower is operating. You could have a belt off, the door switch could be in the open position or something simple like that. If this checks out OK., you will need to have a technician check the charge

SOURCE: air conditioner

Turn off unit supply and check the blower wheel inside the indoor unit by rotating it manually by your finger if the blower wheel rotates freely then there is something wrong with your fan motor or fan motor capacitor. But if the blower wheel is not rotating freely try to check the fan motor for lubrication or some bushing dried of and no oil

Outside unit freezing up and not heating up room inside

Check the defrost board in the outdoor unit... it should have a wire coming off pins that are stamped 30, 60, or 90. If the wire is on 90, then try setting it to 60 or 30. This just enables the defrost board to check the freezestat in minutes...the shorter amount of time, the less likely the unit will freeze up.

Unit cools great but when extremly hot weather occurs it eventually freezes up.

dirty filters in the indoor unit.As the ambient temperature rises the unit will work harder and longer, its fine when its just a normal day because the evaporator coil wont have time to ice up as the compressor will cycle off before the coil freezes totally, but during extreme ambient temperatures the coil will ice up as the compressor will continue running to reach set-point causing the coil to ice up

My Kenmore 73069's inside fins often freeze up. I don't have it set very low: 75 degrees F. Why does this happen?

Your setting of 75F doesn't affect the freezing because it is a result of the boiling point of the refrigerant in the a/c unit. The lower the refrigerant pressure is, the lower the boiling point is and the refrigerant cools the coil to that temperature also known as saturation temperature. The 75F is what it lets the room air get cooled to before it shuts off. The freezing can also be caused by low air flow across the coil which can be caused by dirty air filters, dirty fan, dirty coil or fan not running/not running fast enough. So check your filters and the coil to make sure they are clean. Make sure the evaporator fan is running. Then you may need to get the refrigerant charge checked.

Freezes up in less than an hour used 3 times and freezes each time model 59516 serial#93421578 installed 12-4-2009 dometic roof ac

You are either low on refrigerant, dirty coil or filter or your blower is not working or running at the proper speed. Make sure you have the blower on high speed, then, if it freezes up you are probably low on refrigerant. You need to have a HVAC service technician check it out, unless you are fimiliar with or work on air conditioning systems.

Coils freeze up

Make sure blower is running at the proper speed, if it's running to slow do to bad bearing or capacitor, the coil will freeze up.
Check evaporator coil and filter to see if they are dirty if they are then the coil will freeze up
Check the charge if it's low on refrigerant the coil will freeze up.
If your not sure how to check these things, then you should have a HVAC company, check it out for you.

It keeps freezing up if you put it past #5

Hi and welcome to FixYa. I am Kelly. Freeze ups are caused by a couple things.

1. The first thing is a dirty evaporator coil. Air conditioners that run 24 hours a day should be thoroughly cleaned every 90 days.

2. The Blower fan wheel is dirty

3. The fan motor is not running fast enough.

Most of the time these 3 items listed above are the main reasons and Air Conditioner Freezes up.

Thanks for using FixYa,

Kelly

Air conditioner stops blowing ,can fill the air faintly. Had it looked at once tech beneath glove box started blowing a year ago happening again help. Chris from Mansfield Texas

sounds like the coil in the dash is freezing up or is somehow blocked, if its happening again over a period of time you probably have a slow freon leak causing the eventual freeze-up. you should isolate the leak and have it repaired and then recharge the system.

It keeps freezing over in a short period of time.

I am guessing that this is a window mounted unit??

The main reason for an air conditioner freezing over is that it is not getting enough air flow. You should replace your filter, make sure not to fold over any of the soft metal fins, you may also have build up in these fins and that too will restrict air flow and cause the unit to freeze up.

If this is central air, then the same thing is true, start with the filter, but remember that you need to let the system breath. Do not close off to many vents in your home thinking that you are going to save money, in fact this can cause your power bill to increase because the system has to work harder and hotter.

If the unit continues to freeze up, you should have a certifed A/C tech come out and take your air conditioner apart and clean it. If it's a window unit it might be better to just replace it all together.

Hope this helps your problem,

Glenn
