There are three possibility's first one is a bad run cap on the motor you would have to remove the cover and unplug unit and look for the cap see if its blown apart or bulged . or it may have just opened and be defective
the second is that it's jammed and the motor is going out on a thremal over load to protect the motor . you could try pulling the emergency release and try it one it resets its self . the third is that the motor has a shorted winding on it and will require replacement . at that point it most likley would be more cost effective to replace the opener

It is either a problem with the lower limit screw/switch or the capacitor that gives the motor the jolt to get started.

Likely failure of the lift springs on the door mechanism-- not a problem of the Liftmaster. Try pulling the release and lifting manually-- that will show you if the door cannot be lifted, where the problem lies-- with the door mechanism.

SOURCE: motor hums but door will not open

Remove the cover and check the drive gear. It is white nylon and is just in front of the motor. The part number is 41A2817 and is available from Sears or any good door opener service company. It comes with instructions.

SOURCE: Sears Craftsman Garage Door Opener Wireless Keypad Model and a LiftMaster Chamberlain Professional Garage Door

Hello,

I had the same frustrating dilemma with my Craftsman LiftMaster garage door and Keypad, Model 139.53754-01 (dated 10/06; and has the # 315 MHz).

To resolve “the dilemma”, grab your keypad, climb up on a ladder to access the garage door opener’s motor unit. On the right side of the motor unit, remove the white plastic casing by pressing buttons on each side and pulling down. This will expose the programming area, and for our purposes, the “Learn” button.

1. On the motor unit, press and release the “Learn” button. The Learn indicator light will glow steadily for 30 seconds.

2. Within 30 seconds, enter a four digit personal identification number (PIN) of your choice on the keypad. Then press and hold the ENTER button.

3. Release the ENTER button when the motor unit lights blink. The code has been “learned”/stored/activated.

Good Luck, and I Hope this Helps!
Gail
For possible future reference:

How to change an existing, known PIN
(Changing an existing PIN can be done with the wireless remote keypad, and does not require access of the motor unit.)

From the keypad:

1. Enter the four digits of the present PIN, then press and hold the # button. The opener light will blink twice. Release the # button.

2. Enter your new 4-digit PIN and press Enter. The motor unit lights will blink once when the PIN has been “learned”/stored/activated. Test by entering the new PIN, and pressing Enter.

SOURCE: Liftmaster 1/3 HP - humming, but does not open.

It's the gear drive. There are kits online for about $40, if you're semi-handy you can replace it yourself. Search for liftmaster replacement parts.

SOURCE: My Liftmaster GDO makes a clicking sound and won't open

See if the trolley is jammed against the bolt just in front of the motor unit. If so remove the bolt and then run the opener until the door is closed. While the door is closed locate the 'up limit' control which is on the side of the motor unit. Turn this control 2 complete turns in the opposite direction of the arrow printed on the cover. Remember to replace the bolt.

SOURCE: How do I tighten sagging garage door chain?

I think you have more problems than just a sagging chain. It is most likely sagging because the bronze bushing at the gear and sprocket assembly is bad. It lets the sprocket lean forward and loosens the chain. You will also need to remove the cover from the motor unit and check the drive gear. It is a white gear just in front of the motor and is most likely stripped.

29 years is along run on an opener. Personally I would replace it and not spend any money trying to repair it. You can try and find a control panel, or buy a new opener for $200.00 at HD. you can leave track in place replace rollers from new opener box.
