Yty reinstalling the printer driver, if that doesn't work than uninstall fom control panel and reonsall software for printer. First try turning it off then back on. This will reconfigure the printer.

I am out of ink cartridges (none in the printer) but I just want to scan something...how can I do this?

You can still scan using either the command menu on the scanner or the HP software from you computer. As long as you are not trying to print, having no ink should not effect the scanning.
If you have the HP solution center software, you can open that application and pick scan a document or scan a picture.
From the PSC 1610v controls follow these directions:

Scan to an application

You can scan originals placed on the glass directly from the control panel.

1. Load the original face down on the right front corner of the glass.

User Guide 59

Use the scan features

2. In the Scan area, press Scan To.

The Scan To menu appears. The Scan To menu lists destinations, including

applications, for anything you scan. The default destination is the one you

selected the last time you used this menu.

The Scan To menu can be configured. You can designate which applications and

other destinations appear on the Scan To menu by using the HP Image Zone

software on your computer.

3. To select an application to receive the scan, press until the destination you

want appears on the control panel display, and then press Start Scan.

A preview image of the scan appears in the HP Scan window on the computer,

where you can edit it.

For more information about editing a preview image, see the onscreen HP Image

Zone Help that came with your software.

4. Make any edits to the preview image in the HP Scan window. When you have

finished, click Accept.

For more information on editing a scan in the HP Scan window, see the onscreen

HP Image Zone Help.

The HP All-in-One sends the scan to the selected application. For example, if you
chose the HP Image Zone, it automatically opens and displays the image.

If you don't have the HP solution center, you can download it from this link:

How to scan using hp j4550 with vista os

Scan with HP software in Vista

Scan without using HP software in Vista

Scanning without using HP software should be used as a fallback, or for troubleshooting certain problems. HP has full-featured software for your product and the Vista OS (recommended).

I have the officejet 6310 but cant use the scan feature, how do I get it to work

this is how you use the scanning features of your printer.
To use the scan features, the HP all-in-one and computer must be connected and turned on. The HP all-in-one software must also be installed and running on the computer prior to scanning. To verify that the HP all-in-one software is running, look for the HP all-in-one icon in the system tray at the lower-right side of the screen, near the time.
NOTE: Closing the HP Windows system tray icon can cause the HP all-in-one to lose some of its scan functionality and result in the No Connection error message. If this happens, you can restore full functionality by restarting the computer or by starting the HP Image Zone software.
For information about how to scan from the computer, and how to adjust, resize, rotate, crop, and sharpen scans, see the onscreen HP Image Zone Help that came with the software.
Scan an original
Follow these steps if the HP all-in-one is directly connected to a computer through a USB cable.

1.
Load the original face down on the right front corner of the glass.
2.
In the Scan area, press Scan To . The Scan To menu appears, listing destinations, including applications, for anything that is scanned. The default destination is whichever one was selected the last time this menu was used.
3.
To select an application to receive the scan, use the arrow buttons to highlight it and then press OK or Start Scan . A preview image of the scan appears in the HP Scan window on the computer.
4.
Make any edits to the preview image in the HP Scan window. When finished, click Accept . The HP all-in-one sends the scan to the selected application.

Send a scan to an HP Instant Share destination
Follow these steps if the HP all-in-one is directly connected to a computer through a USB cable.

1.
Load the original face down on the right-front corner of the glass or, if using the document feeder tray, in the document tray.
2.
Press Scan To on the control panel of the HP all-in-one. The Scan To menu displays.
3.
Use the Up Arrow and Down Arrow buttons to highlight HP Instant Share .
4.
Press OK or Start Scan to select the destination and scan the image. The image is scanned and sent to the selected destination.
NOTE: If an original is detected in the automatic document feeder, one or more pages are scanned. If no original is detected in the automatic document feeder, a single page is scanned from the scanner bed.
NOTE: For Windows users, the HP Image Zone software opens on the computer, and the HP Instant Share tab displays. A thumbnail of the scanned image will display in the Selection Tray. For more information on the HP Image Zone, see the onscreen HP Image Zone Help that came with the software.

Scanner will not save to computer

By default, the HP all-in-one sends all scans to the HP Photo & Imaging Gallery for you to preview. Suppose that you want to scan your photos directly to email instead. To do this you will need to modify the destination assigned to the front panel scan button. Here is how to do it:
  1. If you have not already done so, open the HP Director and click Settings , point to Scan Settings & Preferences , and click Scan to… Setup . The Button Settings dialog box appears, with the Destination List tab on top. The HP all-in-one automatically inventories your computer and lists all the possible scan destinations for you in the Available Scan Destinations list.
  2. Using our example of scanning directly to email, select the Email destination in the Front Panel Destination List and click the Move arrow to move it to the top of the listing.
  3. Click OK to save the new destination setting and close the dialog box. All of the scans you do using the HP all-in-one front panel buttons will now be sent directly to your email program, instead of to the HP Photo & Imaging Gallery.
  4. Click Scan Picture or Scan Document in the HP Director to scan using your new settings, or click a Scan button on the HP all-in-one front panel.

  3. On the Scan Settings or Scan Button tab, click Apply Scan Profile and select the scan profile that you want.
  4. Click OK . The scan profile that you selected will apply to all future scans for the scan type that you selected.
