Your CPU isn't recognising your hard drive. If it is a lap top, check to make sure u didn't accidentally loosen it, there is an unlock button on bottom of some laptops that unlocks your hard drive. If that isn't the issue, then some how either the plug came loose or your drive is corrupted. There are many ways to fix it, but recovering data will be difficult. If there is data that you must have, you will have to replace the drive(or use a friends CPU) and get data recovery software. You can also just bring the drive somewhere like best buy geek squad or other reputable CPU repair man to have it recovered. If you do that, they will sell you new drive and recover all data possible and restore CPU to factory settings.

SOURCE: no boot device available- strike F1 to retry boot ...

you can try this steps to resolve your issue:
1. clean your disc drive with white cloth and alcohol
2. try to re-install the OS
3. if this won't work try to download another boot disk like EBCD
or ask a friend to create you a boot disc and try to boot your computer with it.

- This can rule out or confirm a Bad Windows OS disc, thus let's you install you Windows OS in the process.

4. try to re-install again the OS

SOURCE: No boot device available - strike F1 to retry

it is hard drive or HDD is damaged or corrupted, i will advice you to buy and upgrade to a new one and then install back the OS, I mean that you need to install back the operating system. Firstly open up the system and remove the old and damaged HDD "hard drive" then put the new one in after you might have purchased, you can get a new HDD from just about any computer stores. After you have put in the new HDD, then reboot your system and put the opearating system CD into the CD drive to start the installation of the OS, follow the instructions carefully. But make sure you get the correct component for the CPU.

If this is difficult for you to do, kindly get a computer engineer or technician to help you out. Thanks

Check your BIOS, by pressing F2 and see if the hard drive is recognized. It should indicate the MFR next to the hard drive listing. If it's not there, then you might have a bad hard drive. If it is there, try re-installing the operating system with the set-up disk. You can also go to the Dell website, enter you service tag number, and get technical support for your particular laptop. It might have a recovery partition in the hard drive to recover to factory settings.

Things to check, go to BIOS F2, reset defaults and reboot, see if the HDD is seen. If it is, the battery on the motherboard is likely dead and needs replacement (Watch battery at Walmart, 3 dollars)
If the HDD doesn't detect after resetting the BIOS, then most likely a Hard Drive failure

Can't factory restore dell inspiron 531 (windows xp).

You might want to try going into setup and setting your boot drive options to DVD drive as your 1st, HD as 2nd and Floppy as 3rd. Put your windows disk in the DVD before boot and run the program from DVD.
