The oil has dried out while in storage and the moving parts are frozen. I use liquid Tri-Flow Synthetic Oil. Open the top of the machine and put two drops of oil every place that metal rubs against metal. Gently hand rotate the handwheel to see how things move. (Probably shouldn't oil any plastic parts.) Then do the same in the bobbin area. If it is really stuck, use a handheld hair dryer and direct hot air into the top and bottom of the machine.

Once it is working again, be sure to clean and oil on a regular basis--at least every six months if it's not in use. When in use, oil and clean every 40 hours of constant sewing.

Sewing machines need to be worked periodically even if you aren't sewing a lot. The oils and greases inside get all gummed up and literally will seize them up. Your best bet is to take it to the pro, pay the $$$ and have them, clean, oil, grease, replace belts, and adjust. OR if you want to give it a try.. DIY... kerosene based cleaner. Clean it well, then oil it properly. Make sure the machine is UNPLUGGED while cleaning.

Hi! The motor pulley may be worn and cant turn properly causing the motor to be forced so much. The result will be an instant overheating that results to belt burn too. You will need to replace the motor, pulley and the belt now to make it running. Hope this helps and have a good one!

My 6131 sewing machine has been in storage. I am getting back into sewing and when I push the foot pedal, the machine just makes a buzzing sound like it is locked up. How can I fix?

If it is an older mechanical machine, most likely it has seized due to lack of oil for a long period of time. The old oil has dried and is preventing the parts from moving. Do NOT continue to try to use the machine without addressing the issue as it could permanently damage the motor.

Bernina 180 needle bar won't move up and down

This could be the needle bar clutch. Turn off machine. Unplug machine. Remove needle. Turn hand wheel in normal rotation 1/4 turn. Gently move needle bar up and down by hand you should feel a click and the needle bar will not move up and down easily now. Restart machine and test. If it works all is good. This is a result of the machine requiring professional attention. If you use basting stitches it will likely unclutch again.

Main motor lock, inappropriate needle position, after broken needle

The broken needle may be lodged in the bobbin housing. If you cannot locate, take it in for professional servicing. You may have put the timing out of whack.

My Kenmore Sewing Machine's needle is locked down

best suggestion try inserting new needle. cotton up the top suggests needle problem or incorrect top thread tension, this would effect the feed dog. Because thread is black and most recent use was with pink, the problem thread was already there perhaps in cavity above bobbin but below throat plate. I have had this happen and nothing will move, untill needle released. The bobbin holder tension may also need adjusting after the knots of black cotton are removed.

Motor is spinning- needle not going up and down.

Check that the inner part of the flywheel is tightened up. This has to be loosened when winding a bobbin for underthread. Easy to forget to re-tighten it for sewing.
