Ac compressor fan running backwards.

My brother in law replaced capacitor a couple of years ago, and the fan is running backwards. could it be wired incorrectly. House has been vacant for a couple of years so we just recently noticed the problem last couple of days. I may be wrong, but won't the fan motor run backwards if wired improperly?

Fan motors have rotations, clockwise and counter clockwise, lead end and opposite lead end. If you are looking at the motor from the fan blade side and the wires are on the back (opposite) side of the motor then you are looking at opposite lead end. Then you need to determine the rotation of the blade. It will scoop the air, so turning the blade that direction will give you the rotation. They also sell motors that you can change rotation by changing certain wires they have added.
When you replace a motor you need to notice the rotation and order that rotation. which end of the motor you are looking at to determine it. Then order the same rotation when buying the new one.

SOURCE: AC Unit is not working

if you got high volt to the outdoor machine....make sure the thermostrat is in fact on.open the control box cover to the a/c.a round or oval soda pop lookin can thing should be visually noticeable.is it blown up.thecan top will be bulged.if it is the capacitor is defective.duel capacitors control phase shift for both motors...the outdoor fan and the compressor.a big black relay with the wires comming from the outdoor fuse box should be noticeable.this is the high volt contactor, is the contactor pulled in?beets the **** out of you???grab a screw driver by the insulated handle, not the metal part of the screw driver.manually push it in.did the fan start to go???if so bad contactor or no signal from t'stat to turn machine on.if not no high volt to machine(breaker tripped or failed) or fan motor seized leading to compressor O.L.

SOURCE: home ac compressor fan won't turn all the time.

your looking at $175-$225 for just the single phase motor depending where you purchase, I just replaced mine(identical unit) due to screaming dry bearings, if you replace it your self make sure to keep new wires tight along side of unit or fan will cut them if loose and its a fan- 5mfd/25mfd compressor@440volt cap

Condenser fan replaced one year ago, fan not turning but can hear motor

the answer to your problem is most likely the motor start capacitor. A AC motor can run in both directions. The start capacitor is used to cause the current to lag behined the voltage which determines the direction the motor will turn. Its posible the start and run capacitors are in one can. so changing one will change the other. However look for a wiring diagram. Do not asume that both capacitors are wired in properly. They may be fighting one another causeing premature failure.

Can the compressor run w/ a 'blown' capacitor?

The capacitor starts the motor. You would have had some other problem had the motor not started. The A/C ran until the failing capacitor no longer provided the ability to start the motor at which point your A/C died.
My A/C bulged both its capacitors 2+yrs ago and it's been running ever since they were replaced, no problem.
I think you're OK.

Central air conditoner outside unit

Well, the answer is yes. I have seen a bad capacitor cause a fan motor to run backwards. BUT..... After replacing the capacitor and WIRING it up the right way, everything should be fine. A lot of aftermarket condenser fan motors are reversible, so it can run counter-clockwise (CCW) or clock-wise (CW). However, most factory fan motors come one directional and on your specific unit, the air should always push out of the top. Running the unit with the fan going backwards will actually some-what do it's job, but damage other components like the compressor because it runs at higher operating pressures than what it is designed for.

Have someone else look at it! That's going to be the best advice I can give you. If they can prove that a capacitor caused the motor to permanently run backwards..... I want to know! Hope this helps and good luck with your unit.

My condenser fan is running backward

An abrupt cycle of power can cause a motor to run backwards. If you turn the power off again and wait 10 seconds or so (enough for blade to stop spinning) it should run the right way. Put the capacitor back the other way and try again.

AC fan running backwards

Check to see if it has some wires for reversing the direction. Some have four wires you can switch around to change the direction. If not make sure the capacitor is connected to the start connection and not the run connection. The wires for reversing the direction should be orange and yellow or purple and yellow and will be shorter than the rest. Hope this helps. Let me know what you find.

My Goodman a/c unit will not turn on ..

You have a short circuit in the outside system. Either a bad compressor, bad fan motor or possibly a bad capacitor. Visually examine the capacitor. If it is bulged out anywhere, replace it. Check for burned wires on the capacitor and all other connections.
Remove the compressors wires from the circuit and restart the unit. If the fan runs the problem is in the compressor. If the fan does not run,the problem is with the fan motor.

Compressor fan motor runs backwards

Most likely a bad motor or bad capacitor. I would check the capacitor first as this is probably a $20 fix. The fact that it runs in the correct direction but at a reduced speed really leans hard to the capacitor.

Good Luck and hope this resolves things for you. Let me know.

Suddenly stopped cooling

Sounds to me like the run capacitor is bad. It is a dual one which means runs the fan and the compressor. No big deal capacitors are only 10 bucks and easy to replace.

First turn off the electricity to unit at breaker would be best. Next after you open the access panel locate the capacitor and make a note which wires go where one side is marked fan the other is herm. in the middle is comm. Take the old one in and get a new one same size and reinstall. Now parts only have one year warranty but they should have a discount on a person that bought a unit from them if you talk to them and tell them how can this happen only 2 years old. you know the story they might just throw one in for free to keep good business practice. Let me know how it goes. ken
