Reset the printer with the following method that I searched on the Brother solutions website - took an hour of searching...

  1. Turn the printer off.
  2. Press and hold the Go button on the front of the printer, at the same time turn the printer power on.
  3. When the Toner light is on by itself, release the Go button.
  4. Push and hold the Go button again, release the Go button when the Paper light is on by itself.

Black smudges down left side of page

How do I clean white or black spots on printed documents? Description: First make 10 to 15 copies of a blank, white sheet of paper.
If you still see the spots on printed documents after making multiple copies, clean the drum unit as follows:

  1. Remove the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly, and then remove the toner cartridge from the drum unit.
  2. Position the print sample in front of the drum unit so you will know the exact position on the drum that is causing the poor print.
  3. all-ug-19.gif
  4. Turn the black gear on the drum as you check the surface of the OPC drum.
The OPC drum is photosensitive so do not touch it with your fingers.
  5. all-ug-20.gif
  6. When you find the substance on the drum surface that matches the print sample, gently dab the surface of the OPC drum with a cotton swab that is lightly dampened with isopropyl alcohol.
  7. Note
      • Do not use a scrubbing or wiping motion because this might damage the drum.
        all-ug-21.gif
      • Do not try to clean the surface of the OPC drum with a sharp object, such as a ball-point pen, because this might cause permanent damage to the drum unit.
  8. If the print quality still has not improved you need to install a new drum.

Red "Paper" light stays on; printer will not print.

Paper light flashing could mean several things on this machine.

There could be a paper jam in the machine. Open the front cover remove the drum and toner and look in the machine. You can also check in between the drum and toner by removing the toner from the drum. Open the back cover and look for a Jam as well.

Try putting a piece of paper in the manual feed tray which is right above the paper tray, sometimes on certain documents the margins are too big and asks to go into the manual feed slot.

Printer light says paper jam but cannot find it. Almost have the whole printer torn apart and cannot figure it out. I copy the light comes on and paper only feeds in about 1/4 way. Then a real paper jam....

Did you remove the strip from the toner cartridge before you installed it? There should have been a tab to pull out a strip that looks like a long piece of tape. This prevents the toner from spilling out during shipping. It must be removed prior to use.

What is the difference between a toner and a drum on a BB4400 OKI printer?

The toner is the black powder which the printer uses to turn type and pictures into a printed piece. The drum is the device that actually fuses the image to the paper. Toner cartridges and drums have a service life. Toner cartridges will have say a 3000 sheet capacity. When it is empty you replace it. The drum will have a 10-20,000 sheet capacity. Typically the drum is three to four times more expensive to replace. Many companies will give you a credit for turning them in vs ending up in a landfill.
Good luck.

I have a HL5240 It ran out of paper an now wont print

The paper sensor that hangs down under printer and above cassette comes out of position on this series. It takes delicate hands to reposition it. Or better to bring it to a service center.

New toner cartridge and paper jam

Does this happen when you install the old toner? Is the NEW toner an OEM or compatible? I have run into this problem before on some other Brother all in one models. There is a sensor flag located just below the toner and drum unit. Remove the toner/drum unit, check that the sensor flag will move to back and forth freely. My customer removed the toner and drum unit and threw the drum unit away, not realizing that the toner seats into the drum unit. When they placed just the toner into the printer, it read paper jam. Because the drum unit is part of the paper path, the sensor was not in the correct position.
Try re-seating the toner into the drum unit and then re-seat the entire unit into the printer. Let me know if this helps.

Toner light doesnt go away in our printer and the printer doesnt print. We changed the cartridge please help us

The HL-2070N gets jammed in a toner end-of-life error condition. Perform the following to clear (I have 120 in the field so I know it works!):

With paper loaded, new toner in,

  1. Open front door
  2. Turn off printer
  3. While holding down the GO button, turn printer back on
  4. When all four LEDs light up release GO button. All LEDs will turn off
  5. Press the GO button 2 times. The 3 LEDs (toner, drum, paper) will light up solid
  6. Press the GO button 5 times
  7. Paper light will be blinking
  8. At this point the toner end-of-life condition has been reset. Close front door.
BTW, I got this from Brother Support. Also, just a reminder, timing is important here so don't pause between button presses.
