Select EconoFast or Draft as the print quality setting in the printer properties. This will prevent the color cartridge from being used.

Try another color cartridge. The color cartridge is used to print grayscale images in Normal or Best print modes, so if one color has run out, the printout will have the wrong tint. With a full color cartridge, the colors can be properly combined to create a composite black.
When printing with Normal or Best as the print quality setting, the HP Deskjet 710C or 720C or 722C series printer will use the color ink to improve print quality output, even when printing a grayscale image.
Ensure that cartridge are not refilled, then only you do the following process:>Got to printer properties>printing preferences>color>select print in grey scale>apply>OK.. Then check..Reason why its act like this: In printer properties if its selected as print in color, printer mixes colors to create black(which is visible look like dark grey).Select in properties as above said before clicking OK for the print command, then only printer uses mono cartridge..
Click on Start
Select printer & faxes.
Right click your printers icon.
On the drop down menu select printing preferences.
Uncheck the auto/color box and select grey scale printing.
All your printing now will be black.
You have not indicated which brand printer you are using?
Anyway this could be problem of setting OR your ink in the cartridge is finished.
Do the following:
Go to Printer and Faxes in Control Panel
Right click on the printer in use.
Click on Properties in the displayed menu.
Go to Printing Preferences.
Select Grey scale/Black in the check boxes.
Try printing again.
If it still does not solve your problem.
Go to Properties again and press Maintenance Tab.
Clean the print head and the nozzles.
Try Printing again.
If still it does not solve your problem I am afraid you have to change the ink cartridge.
You need to take it a couple steps further after your test print. Sounds like your print heads need cleaning or your cartridge may need aligning. It's best to do this each time you install a new cartridge. get more information and help from here .
On the printer driver, (after click "print" and the menu for selecting the printer appears and you can select the number of copies etc...go to"properties") .
Here go to the "Color" tab.. if you truly only want to use black ink, then select "Print in greyscale" and select "Black only". After that just Click "OK" at the bottom and "Ok" to print your job in truly just black ink. :)
This is either because:
1. You only have black ink remaining and your tri-colour cartridge is empty or
2. In the printer driver settings you have selected either: Print Grey scale or Use black only.
I beleive your problem might be the last option.
To fix it :
1. Go to the printer driver (in vista go to: Start, Control panel, Printers, right click on your printer and select "printing preferences").
Now you are inside the printer driver.
2. go to the "color" tab.
3. Tehre you'll see if you have selected wither "Print in grey scale" and/or "Black only".
4. To ensure you get color again, de-select the"Print in grey scale" option.
I solved this problem but probably not what the printer manufacturer would recommend! The reason you are just getting grey is that the black ink cartridge is either empty or dried out from non use and only the color cartridge is working. I had the same problem after being away for 5 months. I put the printer cartridge in a bowl of warm water to disolve the dried out ink on the print pad. I dried off the cartridge with a soft cloth and then it worked perfectly.
