Im Using Windows 8 In Dell Latitude E6520 Core 17 and After I used it for few minutes (3-4 minutes) the system froze. Only the mouse was working. After about 1 minute the mouse cursor stopped responding as well, leaving me with a 100% frozen laptop. I couldn't even switch to a console (Alt + F1) and reboot gracefully. I had to do an hard reboot. The problem arises every time I start my pc, I can only use it for few minutes. The mouse cursor is always the last to freeze.

Sounds like your dealing with a software issue. Most likely a video driver. if there was a recent time that the machine worked, I'd run a system restore. Then look for what might have been installed that caused this problem so you can stay away from it.

Test the computer's Hard Drive. There are a lot of reasons you might want to test your hard drive for problems. One of the major reasons to perform a test would be if your hard drive is making strange noises. This can often be a sign of a failing drive, something a test can point out.

If the problem is a software issue (virus or too much software installed on the PC) running a System Recovery should have fixed the problem. Try running a test on the computer's Hard Drive. A failing Hard Drive causes slow performance (slow boot, slow computer performance, programs takes too long to load or will not laod at all). And another indicator that the Hard Drive is failing is clicking noises. If you hear clicking noises, backup your files as soon as you can.

You can use free Hard Drive diagnostic tools what can be downloaded from the internet. One of them is Seagate Seatools. You can download it from here - click this link

SeaTools for Windows can perform several basic tests that can help determine the health of your hard drive. Your available hard drives and tests are easy to see when the program opens and can be ran with just a few clicks of the mouse.

Hope this help. Goodluck!

Hi,

There could be numerous causes for this issue, so it may be hard to narrow down the exact problem. It could be your computer is overheating, has to many background processes running, hardware or software issue. Some laptops have battery settings that can effect computer performance. You may have the battery settings set to "power saving" which could cause it to go slow. At the bottom right on the toolbar, you should have a battery icon, if you right click that you can go into the power saving options. See what it is set to. A high performance settings will obviously increase performance but decrease battery life. Also, Windows 7 has some new graphic settings which are resource intensive, like Aero. Try lowering your Windows GUI settings and see if this helps. You can do this by right clicking on the desktop and going to Personalize. Set it to a Classic Theme and see if you see an improvement.

I wrote a couple of tech article you can read and it may help fix your issue.

Computer Freezes, bad performance article
Computer Processor maxed, poor performance
Tips to speed and clean up your computer

It could be you just need to clean up the computer. There is a good computer clean up/optimization tool called TuneUp 10. You can get a free trial of it by clicking here.

Comment back if you have any questions.

SOURCE: Hello All, My dell latitude e5510

If you have windows XP as Operating System then this freezing problem on plugging external hard drive or freezing while watching a movie extra will persist. Go for windows 7 as operating system in this machine and you will get rid of all these issues... there is some compatibility issues with WinXP it seems... mine is working perfectly fine since i changed the OS to Windows 7. All the best ..
