Hello Experts,
Just recently, my Sony VAIO laptop crashed on me. I just woke up one morning, and it displayed this message on a blue screen:
"Stop: c0000218 {Registry File Failure}
The registry cannot load the hive (file):
SystemRoot\System32\Config\SOFTWARE
or its log or alternate
It is corrupt, absent, or not writable.
Beginning dump of physical memory
Physical memory dump complete"
When booting up the laptop, it starts off normally. It shows the VAIO icon, and then displays the Windows loading bar. After it is done loading, it displays that message above.
A few months back, the hard drive crashed, and I replaced and upgraded it with a 250G Hard Drive, so it would be hard to believe that this new Hard Drive has already crashed.
Any Ideas?
Thanks
Try this: Reboot and select Recovery Mode, then from the c:\windows prompt type: chkdsk
Let it run through checkdisk then try it should boot up.
I have the same problem, and this also started back in May. After replacing c-mos battery, HDD, memory, Optical Drive and processor, it points to the motherboard. It some how the Sata controler fail to detect a hdd. I updated the bios and the same issue. I have no problem if on the bios I set it up to boot from a usb HD.
Forget about the hdd and used a usb bootable drive or key. I also dont want to buy a motherboard since this problem is happing to a lot of sony Vaio system and they are too expensive.
All this problem started with a blue screen 0x00000218.

The first possibility is simply corruption in the
window Registry , the first thing to attempt is a recovery via the Automatic System
Recovery for your particular installation. Since you are attempting to
do a system restore, it's possible you already tried this and had it
fail. If this is not the case, follow the detailed directions presented
in Microsoft Knowledge Base article 307545.

When you end up with a registry corruption, you are limited to what you can do. First thing I would try is this. When you power your system on and immediately after the POST boot, begin pressing F8 on your keyboard. This will bring up a Windows Boot Menu. One of the choices you will see if, "Last known Good Configuration..." If an install of software is what corrupted your registry, this should hopefully undo that. If you are experiencing hard drive failure, this will probably not fix that.
If last known good configuration does not work, I'm afraid that the only other solution is going to try and do a parallel installation of Windows so that you can save your existing data.
What Operating System are you using?
Here's microsoft's official description of your stop error:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/830084
SOURCE: will not boot up past the message I describe below
You might reload your Operating System to correct this. Insert your Recovery disk into your drive, choose DVD as Boot Option, recover your OS.
SOURCE: it has a blue screen
your windows OS is corrupted, you have to reinstall everything from the scratch. Doing a windows repair will not fix it.
