Why is my laptop making such a high pitched squealing noise
There are 3 moving parts with motors on a laptop.
1. The HDD
2. The CPU fan
3. The CD/DVD/Blue ray drive
Check them
If it's the HDD than you will be having problem with the operating system. Back up your data and change with a new HDD. 50$ to 80$ depending on your choice of HDD.
If it's the CPU fan it might be touching a cable or the casing. For this you need to dismantle the laptop and clear this out or change the fan. 10$.
If it's the CD/DVD/Blue ray drive than the laser eye is starting to loose it's ability. You will need to change the drive. 30$ to 50$.
Good luck mate.

Sounds like a hardware problem, but it could be software.
What happens when you mute the volume?
Does it sound like its coming out of the speakers or somewhere else?

High pitch noise usually means the inverter board that drives the lamp behind the LCD display. If the rest of the laptop appears to work, for example, hard drive light blinking while booting, try hooking up an external monitor and hit whatever function key that switches you to the external monitor. If everything works, you may want to replace the inverter board yourself. It is not horribly hard if you are very careful. But it is not exactly a walk in the park kind of work.
If the rest of the laptop does not appear to work, the DC-DC step down power circuit is probably shot, which will also make a high pitch noise. In this case, you will have to replace the motherboard. Replacing a motherboard is a major pain in the behind. In most case, it is not worth the trouble if you have an older model.
