Question about GE Spacemaker JVM1640SJ Microwave Oven

1 Answer

JEM 31 is not heating

I have a 7 year old GE Spacemaker II JEM 31that stopped heating.

When I turn it on it sounds normal of 2-5 seconds and then gets louder.

I only have a DVM for diagnostics.
35 ohms across the diode.

3.3 V AC across the magnatron when running. A frequence measurement floats between about 60 to 100 hz at the magnatron contacts.

I do get a funny smell now when I run it for 30 seconds.

I did measure the input as open. Schematic says 89 ohms.

If this is the case, I am uncertain why there is vibration when the secondary is attached to the magnatron and no noise when the secondary is unplugged.

Would you rewrap the primary or just try to find a repacement?

I don't understand why there are 2 windings on the primary side. One is labled MGT.

My guess is that my questions are out of scope. Thanks if you feel like answering.

Sounds like you have a bad transformer. Magnatron should check less than 1 ohm (with wires unplugged). Diode should check resistance one way and open the other. Must have a proper diode checker for this. Check resistance on the capacitor (make sure it is discharged first). Resistance should come up then back to open, reverse and same thing if cap. is good. Check resistance on transformer windings.

There should be a primary winding, a secondary winding, and a fililment on the transformer. Based on what you are saying I would replace the transformer. However you may find that it's more cost effective to buy a new microwave.

Buzzing (a little bit louder than normal humm), but no popping

WHEN THERE IS A BUZZING NOISE IT MEANS THAT ONE OF THE INTERNAL COMPONENT HAS FAILED .RANGING FROM A SMALL DIODE TO LARGE PARTS LIKE
THE MAGNETRON OR TRANSFORMER OR CAPACITOR. IF IT IS 10 YRS,OLD YOUR BETTER
OFF GETTING A NEW ONE .BECAUSE YOU COULD INVEST MONEY IN THIS ONE AND HAVE SOMETHING ELSE GO TWO DAYS FOR NOW.WITH A NEW ONE YOU ALSO END UP WITH THE NEW WARRANTY. HOPE I HELPED. KEN62 GOOD DAY!

Ge spacemaker xl 1800 - no heat

HI, the loud popping noise was the Magnetron tube. this is the main heating device. the noise filter is also damaged and, should be replaced as well.

In conclusion, replacing the Magnetron tube and noise filter will fix this unit.

Turns on but not heating food sounds a bit louder

Hi, this is common in most microwaves. this abnormal noise is coming from a faulty Magnetron. this device is responsible for the heating process and, it is damaged and not heating at all at this point.Simply replace the Magnetron and, this unit will start to heat once more.

Ge spacemaker II microwave. sensor error lite comes on

Sounds to me like you have a bad magnetron tube. Call GE Factory Service as there is either a 5 or 10 year parts warranty. Or schedule a service call online at www.geappliances.com
