My pilot light is lit but I am not getting fuel to the main source for heater to kick on.

I bought it second handed. Each year I have trouble getting it started. Does a part need to be replaced for the heater to kick on if my pilot light is lit?

if the pilot is lit and the burners wont fire you have an issue in one of the following areas. one of your safeties are open....you have a bad electrical connection or electrical short............tstat control or potentiometer isnt working properly

Could be pressure switch. that is the most common failure. otherwise, ensure gas pressure to unit, make sure gas valve switch is on (inside unit)

SOURCE: Propane patio heater ignition problem

I would change the thermocouple and here is why:

The thermocouple is the pilot's, well, co-pilot! It is the electronic device that senses if the pilot flame is hot enough to sustain burning the gas fuel from the burner. If the thermocouple thinks it's safe, then it keeps open the main gas valve located in the pilot assembly. If the thermocouple does not sense enough heat from the pilot flame (such as when the pilot is out), then the thermocouple shuts off the gas valve to the burners.
How the Thermocouple Works
So what is this thing and how does it work? Well the thermocouple (technically called a thermocouple junction) is a device that contains two metal wires welded at the ends and placed inside a protective metal case. The thermocouple sensor is found at the business end of the pilot flame and is designed to be placed in the hottest part of the flame. The other end is connected to the pilot valve body. As the thermocouple heats up, it produces a small amount of electricity and when it gets hot enough from the pilot, send a signal to open the gas valve by using a solenoid operated by a 24 volt transformer. The thermocouple calls the shots, and by converting heat to an electrical signal, it allows the gas valve to open or close. Once the gas valve is open, gas is then constantly supplied to the pilot and as required for the gas burners (as called for by the thermostat). If the pilot goes out, then the thermocouple gets cold and produces no electric signal to open the gas valve's solenoid and the gas valve shuts off the gas supply to the pilot and burners

SOURCE: Pilot light is lit, but heater will not fire

Make sure thermostat is set higher than water temperature. Make sure pump is running and water is flowing through unit. If gas valve is not opening then flame sensor or gas valve is bad.

SOURCE: pilot will not stay lit after button release

most likely you have a thermopile that has low output. it takes about 100mv to maintain pilot light

SOURCE: Laars Lite 2 LG - pilot light will not stay lit.

It sounds like a thermocouple has gone bad. this is a very common problem with gas powered things ie; water heaters, furnaces, hot tubs. The telltale sign is when you release the pilot light button it won't stay lit. This is a safety feature and is relatively inexpensive and easy to repair.

Under the gas valve is a removable panel. On models of that era there should also be a second panel behind the first. remove both.

the pilot light should be clearly visible.

If no pilot, turn the gas valve to OFF. wait 60 seconds. locate the tubes from the gas valve to the pilot location. turn the valve to pilot, and with a long match or grill lighter lit, place flame at the pilot location and press down on the pilot button beside the main valve.

pilot should light. If not shut off the gas and call a technician. If yes, hold the pilot button for 60 seconds, then slowly release. Pilot should stay lit. If not, shut off gas and replace thermocouple, start relight sequence over. If pilot stays lit, replace inner cover and adjust temp to 120 deg. If heater fires up, replace outer cover. Done.

If heater does not light, replace gas valve or entire unit. Water heaters have a limited life expectancy, and if my recollection is correct your unit is 10yrs past warranty.

Pilot light goes out after thermostat kicks off

If it's a direct spark ignition type heater maybe that's how it's designed to.work .When called for heat pilot open allowing gas then ignitor spark and ignite the pilot then gas valve open and allow gas through burner then unit fires off .
Once temp is met pilot valve closes and pilot out .

No Hot Water

Well, let's start the trouble shooting process with trying to get the pilot lit...
Have you removed the cover at the bottom of the heater?-- Can you see an pilot light inside?

If not, Can you try lighting the pilot-- and noticing how the pilot flam heats the little ThermoCouple (TC)?
Note: In order for gas to flow thru the main control valve, the pilot light has to be heating the TC-- to generate a voltage, that in turn allows the main gas valve to open.
Do you need help in getting the pilot light lit?-- do you understand the need to hold down the start button, until the TC gets heated up?

Let us know what you find

Main burner not lighting

Could be bad coupler or pilot valve is not staying up due to bad spring. If the light does stay lit at all, then the problem is with the fuel.

Water heater pilot light

it also sounds as though the pilot injector could be blocked so when the boiler comes on it extinguishes the pilot & then when the burner goes off boiler shuts down, or also the pilot rate maynot be set right, so when the main burner kicks in it robs the pilot of the gas it requires.
It could be that, or there is lack of ventilation for the boiler, so you get flame lift off when the boiler fires?
