3840 is an old scanner and the latest driver for it in microtek website is for xp. but you can try using the win7 64-bit driver of ArtixScan DI 1210 which you can download here:

after downloading, DON'T INSTALL it. put it in a folder, then using your WINRAR, extract it (right-click then click Extract Here). Then MANUALLY UPDATE your driver by browsing to your folder when windows detect your printer or click add printer in Devices and Printers in Control Panel.

On the back of the Epson Perfection 1660 Photo there is a lever that shows a lock and a unlock by where you plug in the wire to the computer. It must be in the unlocked position otherwise it will make that loud clicking noise and not work. Hope this helps.

that's the specific driver. download and install that. if you find that vista programs can now 'see' the scanner, but still don't 'know what the scanner is', then you can uninstall the driver again, and then go back to the exe. file and right click on it. Then click Properties. There is a chance that you will see a Compatibility tab. If you do, click that and choose XP compatibility mode from the list, press Apply, then ok. Then install it and reboot again. If it still doesn't work, then either there is no Vista compatibility for your scanner, ie it's too old to use with anything later than xp, or you need to clean the pc and the registry up with something like ncleaner, which is free and a really handy program, i swear by it.
If running XP SP2, then try clicking Start > right click My Computer > properties > Hardware tab > Device Manager button > expand Imaging devices > right click on your Microtek ScanMaker > uninstall > Re boot > and let XP pick up the device and let the found hardware wizard configure it.
I have seen plenty of hardware that when following the devices manufacturer's instructions for install, such problems as you're having occur and XP SP2 usually will cure it, though you may still need the device manufacturer's CD (for the driver) in your optical drive.
This link: http://support.microtek.com/downloads/bymodelname.phtml?viewtype=2&srch_in=ScanMaker+5950&frmsearch.x=10&frmsearch.y=11&frmsearch=Search&frm_rqst=2&axn=1 will allow you to select between the 5950 and 5950 Pro then on the next page you will be able to download the latest XP driver for your Scanmaker among drivers for other Operating Systems also.
A Scanner this old is not likely to work with a computer that is current.
You did not say if you have the driver disk to try.
If you have and have loaded the MiraScan software, right click on the program icon and click on properties then campatability and set to run as W98 and see what happens
You will not find driver for this one now.
I assume you are running XP or 2000
This scanner designed to run with W95/98 is not compatible with modern NTFS systems.
