This seems to be a chain brake that's applied , try turning off chain brake by pulling back on hand guard till a click is felt

some folks moving up from an older saw to a more modern saw are not so familiar with chain brakes and don't understand them and how they work

SOURCE: Chain does n't rotate

Is the chain brake "on"?, can you pull the chain around the bar?

Is the drive sprocket teeth worn all the way through.
Does the engine high rev or is it loaded when you throtle up?

If your chain has recently jumped off the bar while running, your chain may have "burs" on the drive links (part of the chain that rides in the bar groove). These burs will make the chain rub the inside of the rails and thus bind the chain in the groove. You can file these off with a flat file if there aren't very many, but you may need to just replace the chain. You can find files, bars, chains & sprockets for your saw at PartsBuggy.com.

WEN 6014: Motor is running, but chain doesn't move. Chain sprocket seems fine, cogs are only slightly worn, sprocket fits perfectly, no wear. Is there an internal clutch or connector? Motor worn out?

There is a clutch behind the metal housing where the chain sprocket at the engine end attaches to the chain . There are wear parts with springs on them that have to be changed. ChainSaw Shed Chain Saw Parts for Wen Wagner Brand Chain Saws Chains Bars... You can get parts here.

How do i unlock brake on a Poulan wildthing 2375 chainsaw

First, stop your engine. Check to make sure that the chain brake isn't engaged. The chain brake can activate automatically by a sudden movement or impact. You can disengage the chain brake by pulling the chain brake hand guard back against the front handle and releasing slowly. If the chain brake is disengaged and the chain does not turn; turn off the saw, then check the drive links on the chain, the bar groove and the sprocket nose on the bar. A burr on the drive links will bind the chain in the bar. If the bar has been pinched, the chain will not pass freely through the groove. If a sliver of wood has gotten into the sprocket nose, it will not turn at all. Also, look at the drive sprocket on the saw itself to see if it has a groove worn into it. A drive sprocket with a groove worn into it will damage the chain.

Motor turns but chain does not rotate

Ok, so if the clutch is turning and everything with the engine is functioning properly, then it can only be the chain or the chainsaw sprocket. Have you replaced the chain just recently? I'm only asking because even though it may be the right length, there are chains that have different sized drive links. Very seldom do the sprockets wear, but I have seen alot of times where someone buys a new chain and the drive links are either too big to sit properly into the sprocket or they're too small...

Obviously your chain brake is off correct?....

After installing the chain on the new poulan chainsaw, the sprocket gear will not turn, I made sure the cover nuts were loose upon tightening the chain but the sprocket gear will not turn with chain on,...

Did you make sure the brake was off before re fitting the side cover, if not the band will be smaller that the drum and will jam the drum and stop it from turning.

Went to start my XL500 homelite chainsaw and the rope won't pull out.It worked fine when I ran it dry for storage, now it seems like th sprocket won't turn. looks like chain oil is comming out

If it is bar oil then the gasket is leaking between the oil tank and the crankcase, this would mean a full strip down and replace the gasket.

My chain binds on the sprocket and will not turn. have replaced the chain

Remove the bar and chain and examine the sprocket teeth for excess wear or other damage. Make sure the chain 'pitch' (the distance between the drive teeth) matches the sprocket pitch. If the sprocket is badly damaged, the entire clutch should be replaced. Hope this helps!

I have started my McCulloch 338 chainsaw without any problem, but the chain will not move on the chainguide, when throttled up. I have tried to move the chain by hand ( after stopping the machine !!!) but...

The chain may have come off the sprocket.
There are 2 nuts about an inch apart down just past the bar which hold it in place.
Remove the 2 nuts, take off the cover which they hold in place and the bar and chain will loosen.
Check that the teeth on the inside of the chain are on the sprocket. Pull the chain tight against the sprocket and move it. Check that the sprocket turns. With the chain set in the sprocket replace the bar, chain and cover and try turning it again by hand. If it doesn't turn don't try to start the saw as you'll do damage.

If the chain was on properly and it still won't turn the clutch may be burned out. However the fact that you couldn't turn it by hand suggests that the chain was off the sprocket.

Husqvarna chainsa;starts but chain sprocket doesnt

1) Chain brake is on. Pull the handle back towards the operator
2) Chain is too tight on bar
3) Debris caught inbetween bar and chain
4) Sprocket teeth are worn out
