If the machine won't power up its most likely a problem with the power board inside of the machine. I have replaced a bunch of bad power boards on the 600 and 400 series Berninas over the years. The 600 and 400 series machines use the same board. I service and sell lightly used Berninas on eBay under the user name bushvideo.
So this might be my problem. Just unpacked it from a cross country move. Are the motherboards expensive?
The motherboard as many people cal it, and the power board are two different circuit boards inside of the machine. Prices seem to vary greatly depending on what dealer you go to. I communicate with people all over the US and I hear different prices all the time. The power board should be somewhere around $200 and the main print board (most times called the motherboard) can run as much as $500. It could be as simple as a blown fuse on the power board as well. Either way you will need to take the machine to a certified Bernina dealer to see what the actual problem is as there are no user serviceable parts inside the machine.
We have a Bernina Activa 210 and it exhibits the same problem that appears to affect Bernina 210 220 230 240 430 440 630 635 640. Drives the wife crazy. Try this: Turn it on and just wait. Depending on how long the machine has been unused, it could takes minutes or even an hour. As I understand, the problem is an internal power supply component that needs to be "charged." That sounds like a capacitor to me, but I don't have the details. If this works, and you don't want to wait each time for your machine to wake up, there is a Bernina shop in Utah (Dave's Bernina) that replaces the component if you ship the machine to them. But then, if you use the machine often, you won't have the problem. Hope that helps.
I moved recently and when I unpacked my machine it wouldn't power up! I was so upset! I called a local dealer & asked if they worked on Bernina 630 Artista. This morning I decided to google Bernina 630 will not power up. I found your comment, JBSchwartz. I thought I had nithing to loose so I turned it on and wauted. Maybe an hour lafer, I went to check and it was ON!! WORKS BEAUTUFULLY!! Thank you so much!!

SOURCE: where is the shuttle race on a bernina artista
Just to the left of the bobbin case you will see a small lever. Remove the bobbin case and push the lever and that will release the latch which holds the race cover and shuttle (hook).
Clean well with a toothbrush and place one small drop of oil on the edge of the hook where it makes contact with the raceway. Place the hook back and snap the race cover back on.
SOURCE: version 4 of bernina artista will not load on my new computer
I have a solution. (sorry for my bad english) Last week is the notebook of my wife broke down (mainboard was ten years old). So we bought a new one. So I tried install artista V4, no chance (bernina said, you can update to V5). Next step, I install a XP-Pro on the new notebook (no chance too, because I can't find all drivers, they don't develop new drivers for XP).
Now my solution:
I installed a virtual machine (vmware player) with XP-Professional (which I have). At this XP-Machine I installed the artista V4 - it runs!
You can find a lot of help for installing a virtual machine in the www.
If you want, I'll describe the install-process for my vmware.
I hope I could help!
Regards
David
SOURCE: Bernina Artista 630 Turns Itself Off
My troubleshooting would involve taking it in to a Bernina certified technician as it would involve pulling off the covers of your machine for a look. Often this can be the cause of overheating due to high levels of lint build up from people using compressed air to blow out their machine (compressed air is notorius for blowing lint into other areas of the machine) I have also seen the odd plug end swell because customers use harsh cleaning products and it will then not seat properly.
SOURCE: Do I need to oil the Bernina Artista 170? If so,
- yes \-every 3-5 hours of sewing or more if you are sewing very dirty fabrics (used canvas etc)
-remove the shuttle, clean and oil the "race" where the shuttle ocellates
-remove the light cover with the off set torues wrench included with your machine
oil the needle bar, take up lefver joints and the presserfoot bar. any thing more should be done by a qualified technicial who should remove back and front covers and remove lint and dirt and then oil all the bearings

It is likely that your bobbin sensor is either in need of a clean or is faulty. When you drop the bobbin door, the bobbin thread sensor is a black plastic 'box' on the inside of the bobbin door and attached to it. Look carefully and you will see a small lens and an opening next to it - these are the optical parts of the sensor - make sure there's no fluff or dust obscuring the optical parts - give it a brush with your fluff brish and clean the lens very gently with a cotton-bud. Dont use any chemicals or cleaners on this part. If the problem remains after this, the probability is that the sensor is faulty or the sensor connector cable is damaged. The cable runs the full length within the free-arm cover and up to the top of the front panel and I've come across a couple of similar machines where the service person has replaced the free-arm cover poorly and the cable has become trapped in the bottom drive mechanism. If cleaning fails to work, get your machine checked-out by a competent Bernina engineer. In the meantime, you can disable the error message, but dont just use this as a total solution.
