If you open the Settings app on your iPhone, select Messages, and set the iMessage slider to the off position, you will no longer send or receive iMessages on the iPhone. However, depending on your situation, you may end up not receiving text messages from iPhone users. Additionally, if you have multiple Apple devices, the iMessages will still be delivered to your other devices. This is usually not desirable because you want messages sent to your phone number to be delivered to your iPhone.
SMS messages are sent using SMTP. It is the lowest priority for message delivery. What you are experiencing is common with SMTP messages when traffic is high on cell networks. The only fix is to not use SMTP during high traffic and usage times.
Check in your sent folder and look at the envelope next to the message. Each envelope has a check box at the top right corner.
<>If the person you are sending the message to also has Verizon: -If it was received by the other person, the box will be checked. -If it has an arrow next to it, it's still in the process of being sent; possibly because the intended recipient is out of service. -If you click on the sent message and scroll down to the bottom, it will tell you what time the other person received it at.
<>If the person doesn't have Verizon, all the messages you send (regardless of whether or not they were delivered) will have an arrow in the box and it will not tell you what time the person received the message at.
Sometimes, a message will have an I in the box. I think it stands for Incomplete; this only happens to me when I send a message to more than one person and the message doesn't get delivered for some reason.
