How do I test the ALPS MD 1000 printer?

I just bought this printer. I'm trying to see if it works. It doesn't have any black ink cartridge. Only yellow, cyan, magenta and finish. When I try to print it tells me I need black. I don't have black yet. Is there a way I test the printer without black?

Have you tried to install one of the colour cartridges in to the black slot and just do a mono print. The only problem then is that the colour cartridge could become contaminated, so only do this if you don't want to spend out for a new black cartridge. I know that on some printers you can do this. I have not had much to do with ALPS printers.

So I wish you all the luck.

Check to make sure you have the dark grey ink cartridges installed in the printer. The blue (photo) and the Econo Black cartridges cannot be used for the self test.

hello, no the machine will not function with just one cartridge, it must have all 4 colors, black, cyan, magenta, yellow. once the machine fully detects these cartridges, it will then go online, ready for printing. at this time send just windows test page only, to test for communication. if this does not work then there is problem.

We have Alps MD 1000 which makes a grinding noise when we power it up, and then the error light comes on. Is this normal, or is what could be the problem? Where would we need to send it for repairs?...

All ALPS printers make noise when they are turned on. The error light is not normal. Do you have cartridges in the printer? there are two kinds: ones with gray plastic cassettes and ones with dark blue plastic cassettes. For the 1000, you want the gray ones. Are the cartridges installed correctly? Side B should be facing up.

Will not print. turns on lights up makes noise

There are two self tests you can try to test the printer. With only the black cartridge and on sheet of paper. Disconnect the printer from the computer and unplug it. Plug it back in and do the following:

Press and hold the power button. At the same time, press and hold the Ready/Insert button. Release the power button, but keep holding the Ready/Insert button. After 4 seconds, release and press the button again and release. It should print a one page diagnostic test.

The second self print test using all 4 cartridges. Turn the printer on, press and hold the Ready/Insert button for a few seconds and release the button. The test will use all 4 inks.

Cartridge changer error can be bad. Inspect and clean the changer. Try changing the order of the cartridges in the holder. Any effect? With just the black cartridge installed, try printing an internal self print test. Does that work?

Alps md 1300 only prints in black

First of all, Alps MD inks do not "Dry up". They are dry to start with!

It sounds like you may be running XP, with the Microsoft driver for this printer installed. You need to load the Alps driver, which you can get by joining the alps or alpsdecal group at http://groups.yahoo.com. You can find the driver in the files section of one of the groups.
