Officejet 9600: vertical lines (4) in center of page when copying using ADF. No lines when copying from glass. I tried the ADF roller cleaning procedures on HP's trouble shooting pages. They did not help. The lines are not in direct alignment with the rollers. Can I get inside the ADF cover to see if there is debris in there? How can I fix this?

"YOUR troubleshooting pages". We are FIXYA dot com, not HP!

This problem is always caused by dirt or correction fluid on the narrow glass strip that is in the document feeder. Clean it with an alcohol based cleaner. Usually, the head end of the Doc Feeder levers upwards.

Nothing to do with the rollers, it is the optics that need cleaning. As the carriage moves, it records whatever is on the optics. Do your secretaries use correction fluid like Tippex? If I had 10 bucks for the Tippex I have cleaned off them. :>)

An unfortunate issue with any MFP is debris on the slit of glass the document passes over when being scanned but also, dust under the glass which is seen by the lens as a solid causing stripes/lines on copies. Without being able to open that area, [and I really mean by someone who has experience opening up the machine], to clean out the optics of dust/debris, the lines will continue.

John:
When using the ADF, the scanner doesn't move. The long rectangular platen glass on the left side of the machine is used, not the large glass. I believe that if you clean the long, thin piece of glass on the left side of the platen, your lines will disappear.

My officejet pro 8500A prints black vertical lines down the page when I make a copy. I have cleaned and aligned the printheads. What else can I do?

Happened with me too. Turned out to be a small sticky smudge on the ADF glass. That is the smaller glass scan area to the left of the large glass scanning area.
When using the ADF to scan or copy, make sure the smaller glass area is clean along with the rollers.

Lift the scanner top, then look at the narrow pane of glass. There probably is a spek of dust or ink on it. Clean it with alcohol. I've had to remove the glass, due to the speck being on the undersaide of the glass.

Also, lift the ADF cover and clan the rollers with a damp cloth.

My HP Officejet 6310xi displays a vertical line when copies are fed through the ADF and when sending faxes through the ADF, the same problem occurs. What could be the cause?

Open the Top Feeder Cover
Clean the Roller with lint free cloth.
Lift the Roller a bit up and you will find a glass strip underneath the rollers
Clean the glass strip with cloth and close the feeder
Try scanning or copying. it should work

Very crisp vertical grey line appears (glass clean)

I have the exact same problem. It was there since I first bought the MFC-7840W.
Vertical line appears in scans using the automatic document feeder (ADF).
Vertical line does not appear when scanning single page (placing it directly on the glass -- i.e. not using the ADF).

Cleaning the glass strip for the ADF (or the white pressure bar overhead) does not solve the problem.
The problem does not occur with copies using the ADF (using the COPY button which is basically a scan and print). This would suggest that dust and dirt is not to blame because that would also appear on the copies.
But since I believe a copy is basically a scan plus print, they should be using the same electronics -- a hardware problem on the scan would likely appear on a copy also -- there is some difference between how they accomplish this.
It's definitely not a software issue since it occurs on all versions of Windows and Mac OS X (and multiple computers). It also does not matter whether I "push" the scan to the computer by using the scan button on the MFC... or "pull" the scan from the MFC using the Brother Control Center software.

Lines appear when making a copy using document feeder tray

If the lines are vertical (in the direction the ADF feeds, 11in long for 8 1/2 by 11) You can try cleaning the glass the scanner uses when it's using the document feeder. Pull up the top left part of the printer where the documents feed, there's a little rib in the middle of the side to help you do this, then simply pull up the assembly underneath with all the rollers in it, you should see about an inch of glass underneath and a centimeter long strip of white plastic on the assembly (this serves as the white background when feeding slimmer papers) Clean them both. I'd recomend any glass cleaner, just don't spray it in there, spray it onto a cloth.

Black vertical lines on faxes sent using auto document feeder

If you lift up the lid on your scanning device you will notice a glass strip about 1 inch thick and then the large area of glass used for flatbed scanning. The 1 inch strip is used for ADF scanning. Because your papper is moving across the glass strip, any dot, smudge or scratch will affect your scanning and cause verticial lines down the page. Sometimes the dot is not visible to the eye. Get some glass cleaner that has alcohol in it and thoroughly clean the glass strip and it should solve your problem. If it turns out to be a scratch on the glass then cleaning won't help.

Vertical lines when scanning using automatic document feeder...Glass is clean

It is not in the glass. More than likely it is in the rollers of the ADF feeder. If you open the cover of the ADF feeder you can see there are 3 screws (! is found under another small cover furthest to the back of the machine. Once these three screws are removed you can left the entire ADF feeder from the unit. You will then be able to clean all the rollers. Do not use alcohol as this will dry our your rollers and cause them to eventually crack. Just use soap and water to clean the rollers. Then reinstall the ADF feeder assembly back on the machine.

Line in copies that go thru feeder

Hi,

Over time the automatic document feeder (ADF) will get dirty, occasionally causing vertical black streaks or lines in scans and copies .

Manual cleaning of the ADF might be necessary. Follow the procedure below to manually clean the ADF .

You will need the following materials:
  • Soft lint-free cloths
  • Glass cleaner
if you look carefully on the left side of ADF ( top feeder ) there is an assembly which u can lift , there wud be a set of rollers if u lift that part there would be a glass strip . u are suppose to clean that strip .
While holding up the inside of the ADF, clean the glass in the location of the vertical streak with one of the cotton swabs. Try cleaning the glass first with a dry cotton swab. If that does not correct the problem, then moisten the swab with glass cleaner .
If the vertical lines or streaks still appear, go through the above cleaning process again, this time cleaning the entire surface of the ADF scanner glass.
and after this try the following steps as well .
CAUTION: Use only glass cleaner. Avoid abrasives, acetone, benzene, and carbon tetrachloride, all of which can damage the scanner glass.

On my Canon Pixma MP780 a vertical line appears on copies made using ADF

I tried the other solutions listed here - and no luck. After cleaning the inside of the ADF, like the manual suggested - no change. How are you supposed to do that anyway? Deep cleaning the inside of the machine also has nothing to do with it.

I finally figured out why things that I copied with the ADF had lines/marks on them, but those placed directly on the platen (big glass) were fine. When you copy with the ADF, the copy is not being made from the large glass area. Rather, there is a thin glass area right next to it.

Turns out, there were a couple of smudges (goo) on that thin piece of glass which were creating long vertical lines down every sheet. Cleaned the glass - problem solved!

Gosh, I hope this helps someone else save some time, and frustration.
